705. Scripture Verses that can Guide Your Life (#4) - My Word Shall not Return to me Void - December 13, 2024

Welcome to Wisdom Today with Bill Kelley. On today's podcast we will be going over Proverb 13. I will then key in on the first part of verse 1 - A wise son heeds his father's instruction. Friends, many of you may no longer have your earthly dad on this earth. He may have passed away, you may be estranged from him, or you may just not be very close to him. I invite you to recognize God as your trued Father. This verse tells us the importance of listening to His advice and counsel (paying attention to the word of God). On today's lesson, we will continue our study of scripture verses that can guide your life. By the end of today's lesson there are three things I ask that you consider:

1. All scripture is given by insperation of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness.

2. My word shall not return to me void.

3. A wise son heeds his father's instruction.

Scriptures referenced in today's lesson:

John 3:16; 1 John 4:17" Matthew 4:4; 1 Peter 5:8; 1 John 2:15-17;

John 10:10; 2 Timothy 3:16-17; Isaiah 55:11

Call to Action: Please write down each of these scripture passages in a notebook; go over them 2-3 times today, tomorrow, and Sunday.

[00:00:06] Welcome to Wisdom Today. My name is Bill Kelley and I'll be your host. In this podcast we will be exploring the book of Proverbs.

[00:00:22] Let's open in prayer. Father God, I thank you for anyone listening to this podcast today. Lord, I pray that you would reveal to everyone listening how much you truly love each and every one of them. I ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

[00:00:38] This is Proverbs 13, beginning in verse 1.

[00:01:08] The soul of a lazy man desires and has nothing, but the soul of the diligent shall be made rich.

[00:01:17] A righteous man hates lying, but a wicked man is loathsome and comes to shame.

[00:01:25] Righteousness guards him whose way is blameless, but wickedness overthrows the sinner.

[00:01:32] There is one who makes himself rich, yet has nothing, and one who makes himself poor, yet has great riches.

[00:01:42] The ransom of a man's life is his riches, but the poor does not hear rebuke.

[00:01:50] The light of the righteous rejoices, but the lamp of the wicked will be put out.

[00:01:57] By pride comes nothing but strife, but with the well advised is wisdom.

[00:02:04] Wealth gained by dishonesty will be diminished, but he who gathers by labor will increase.

[00:02:13] Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when the desire comes, it is a tree of life.

[00:02:20] He who despises the word will be destroyed, but he who fears the commandment will be rewarded.

[00:02:29] The law of the wise is a fountain of life to turn one away from the snares of death.

[00:02:36] Good understanding gains favor, but the way of the unfaithful is hard.

[00:02:43] Every prudent man acts with knowledge, but a fool lays open his folly.

[00:02:51] A wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a faithful ambassador brings health.

[00:02:59] Poverty and shame will come to him who disdains correction, but he who regards a rebuke will be honored.

[00:03:08] A desire accomplished is sweet to the soul, but it is an abomination to fools to depart from evil.

[00:03:18] He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed.

[00:03:26] Evil pursues sinners, but to the righteous good shall be repaid.

[00:03:33] A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, but the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous.

[00:03:44] Much food is in the fallow ground of the poor, and for lack of justice there is waste.

[00:03:52] He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him promptly.

[00:04:00] The righteous eats to the satisfying of his soul, but the stomach of the wicked shall be in want.

[00:04:10] Friends, today I would like to go over the first part of verse 1.

[00:04:16] And Proverb 13 verse 1 says,

[00:04:21] A wise son heeds his father's instruction.

[00:04:25] Now, friend, I will come back and revisit that verse prior to closing today.

[00:04:31] But what I'd like to do is to continue our study of scriptures that can guide your life.

[00:04:39] Now, I began this new study on Monday, and I went over two verses on Monday, two verses on Wednesday, and two verses yesterday.

[00:04:52] And I will continue that pattern today.

[00:04:55] We will go over two new verses today.

[00:04:58] But if you are joining me for the first time this week and did not get a chance to listen to either Monday, Wednesday, or Thursday's podcast,

[00:05:10] what I have chosen to do is to select some key verses of scripture that can help guide your life.

[00:05:20] Now, I know there may be some people listening today, and they're not all that familiar with the Bible.

[00:05:28] You don't open it up very often.

[00:05:30] You don't read it.

[00:05:32] You don't know scripture hardly at all.

[00:05:35] And that's fine.

[00:05:36] But the purpose of this study is to talk about the importance of not only knowing scripture, but actually getting to the point where you can memorize scripture.

[00:05:52] So when Satan attacks you, and he will, and he's going to come and try to tempt you to do things that you shouldn't be doing, he's going to try to knock you off course, he's going to try to get you in trouble with your wife, to try to argue with her.

[00:06:09] And we need to know scripture, because the word tells us that when Jesus himself was tempted in the wilderness after 40 days, that Jesus responded with the word of God.

[00:06:24] And he said, it is written, it is written, it is written.

[00:06:28] And what I'd like to do is hopefully to stir everyone listening up enough that you would be able to respond the same way when he comes knocking at your door and tries to lie and deceive you.

[00:06:47] So the two verses I'd like to go over today are two very powerful scriptures.

[00:06:52] And they talk about the importance of scripture and why we should read it and why we should learn it.

[00:07:03] And I'm going to go to 2 Timothy 3, verse 16.

[00:07:09] Now, in a way, this should be easy to remember, because these are the same numbers as the most famous verse in the Bible, which we went over earlier this week.

[00:07:19] And that's John 3, 16.

[00:07:21] So this is 2 Timothy 3, 16.

[00:07:26] But what I'd like to do is add verse 17 as well.

[00:07:32] Now, earlier in the week, I asked you if you were able to do so, is to actually buy a small notebook of some kind.

[00:07:42] You know, I don't really just want you to jot down notes.

[00:07:45] I really would like for you to have a notebook and get in the habit of writing down scripture verses that speak to you,

[00:07:56] that are meaningful to you, that when you hear a particular verse of scripture, you go,

[00:08:02] wow, I really would like to know that and to memorize it.

[00:08:07] So anyway, let's go over 2 Timothy verses 16 and 17 out of chapter 3.

[00:08:16] All scripture is given by inspiration of God.

[00:08:24] So God is responsible for all of the Bible.

[00:08:30] He is.

[00:08:32] Now, he was inspired by the Holy Spirit.

[00:08:34] So all of these authors, the people who wrote the Bible are obviously men.

[00:08:40] They have flesh.

[00:08:42] They're just like you and me, except they were stirred by the Holy Spirit and inspired to write down words that the Holy Spirit were given them.

[00:08:54] And is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.

[00:09:07] And this is verse 17.

[00:09:10] That the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

[00:09:18] So friends, my first point today is all scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness.

[00:09:37] That is awesome.

[00:09:40] But verse 17 adds that the man of God may be complete.

[00:09:49] Thoroughly equipped for every good work.

[00:09:52] Friends, the Bible is helpful for us in our everyday lives.

[00:10:01] It helps you to be a better husband.

[00:10:03] It helps you to be a better wife.

[00:10:06] It helps you to be a better parent.

[00:10:08] It helps you to be a better child.

[00:10:11] It helps you to be a better employee.

[00:10:15] It helps you to be a better friend.

[00:10:19] Now, I'm going to go to the book of Isaiah.

[00:10:23] We're going to go to the Old Testament and find out from one of the major prophets, Isaiah.

[00:10:30] And if you go to chapter 55 of Isaiah, listen to verse 11.

[00:10:40] And it says,

[00:10:41] So shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth.

[00:10:48] In other words, it's in the Bible.

[00:10:51] And when you read it, God is speaking to us.

[00:11:09] Friends, you talk about a promise of God.

[00:11:13] This is what Scripture does for us.

[00:11:16] If you read the Scripture or if you write the Scripture down while you're trying to memorize it,

[00:11:24] it shall not return to him, meaning God, void.

[00:11:29] In other words, it's going to accomplish something.

[00:11:31] But then it says it will accomplish what I please.

[00:11:36] And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.

[00:11:40] So, friends, that is verifiable proof that the Word of God is beneficial to us.

[00:11:48] If you look at these two verses, it's beneficial for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction.

[00:12:00] And if you read it, it's not going to return to God void.

[00:12:05] It will have a purpose and you will prosper if you read the Word of God,

[00:12:14] if you memorize the Word of God, if you write the Word of God down.

[00:12:21] So, let's review today.

[00:12:25] 2 Timothy 3, verses 16 and 17.

[00:12:32] The book of Isaiah, chapter 55, verse 11.

[00:12:38] Now, before we close, I'd like to go to our proverb of the day.

[00:12:45] And Proverb 13, verse 1 says,

[00:12:53] So, that is my third point.

[00:12:56] A wise son heeds his father's instruction.

[00:12:59] And what I want you to do is think outside the box a little bit.

[00:13:03] Some of you may not have an earthly father anymore.

[00:13:09] He may have passed on.

[00:13:11] You may be estranged from him.

[00:13:14] Maybe you aren't close to your dad.

[00:13:16] So, I am going to open up the possibility that if that is the case with you,

[00:13:26] and that is the case with me,

[00:13:27] my father passed away way back in 1990.

[00:13:30] He died 34 years ago.

[00:13:33] So, I don't have a father anymore.

[00:13:35] But, God can be my father.

[00:13:40] And it says,

[00:13:41] A wise son heeds his father's instruction.

[00:13:44] So, we can heed God's instruction if we open up his word,

[00:13:54] and if we follow what he tells us to do.

[00:14:01] So, what I'd like to do today,

[00:14:03] and this is the end of the week,

[00:14:06] and I'm going to be going over this for a couple more weeks.

[00:14:10] I'm going to be doing this every episode of this podcast,

[00:14:15] except on Christmas Day and on the 27th,

[00:14:21] when my wife will be on.

[00:14:22] We're going to have a special Christmas service,

[00:14:25] and we're also going to give our ministry update,

[00:14:29] which is always the last Friday of every month.

[00:14:32] But outside of that,

[00:14:34] I am going to go over two Scripture verses each day.

[00:14:38] And so, what I'd like to do is recap,

[00:14:41] if you are joining us for the first time for this week,

[00:14:47] and I'm going to recap the verses that we have already gone over.

[00:14:52] So, you should have eight verses written down,

[00:14:56] and I'm hoping that you're taking the time

[00:14:59] to literally write these down in a notebook.

[00:15:03] So, the first one is John 3.16,

[00:15:06] which arguably is the most famous verse of the Bible

[00:15:11] about God's love for every single person living on earth.

[00:15:15] Then, 1 John 4.17.

[00:15:21] Now, John is the author of the Gospel of John,

[00:15:25] but also 1, 2, and 3 John.

[00:15:30] And John also was the author of the final book in the Bible, Revelation.

[00:15:36] Now, on Wednesday's podcast,

[00:15:38] I went over 1 Peter 5, verse 8,

[00:15:43] and then I went over Matthew's Gospel, chapter 4, verse 4.

[00:15:49] And that is a very famous verse that says,

[00:15:52] Man does not eat by bread alone,

[00:15:55] but that every word that comes from the mouth of God.

[00:16:00] So, friends, we are to eat, basically, the Word of God.

[00:16:05] It should be like a meal to us.

[00:16:08] And Matthew is telling us that it is like a meal,

[00:16:12] that we need to partake of the Word of God

[00:16:15] and read it on a regular basis.

[00:16:18] On yesterday's podcast, I went over 1 John 2, verse 15.

[00:16:26] And I challenged everyone to add verses 16 and 17 to that.

[00:16:35] So, write down 1 John 2,

[00:16:38] and write down verses 15, 16, and 17.

[00:16:43] And then, from John chapter 10, verse 10.

[00:16:49] And then, today's lesson, let's review,

[00:16:53] was 2 Timothy 3, verses 16 and 17,

[00:16:58] and Isaiah 55, 11.

[00:17:02] So, friends, what I'd like for you to do today,

[00:17:05] and your homework assignment, call to action,

[00:17:07] whatever you want to do,

[00:17:08] it's the end of the week,

[00:17:10] be familiar with these eight passages of Scripture

[00:17:14] we've gone over this week.

[00:17:15] I encourage you to write them down,

[00:17:18] go over them one or two or three times

[00:17:22] each day over the weekend,

[00:17:24] and hopefully you'll begin to start memorizing

[00:17:28] these very famous Bible verses.

[00:17:33] Friends, I will never end a podcast

[00:17:36] without giving anyone an opportunity

[00:17:38] to receive Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

[00:17:41] And if there's anyone listening today

[00:17:43] and you've never taken that step,

[00:17:45] I invite you to repeat a simple prayer after me today.

[00:17:49] Lord Jesus, I confess that I am a sinner

[00:17:53] and in need of a Savior.

[00:17:56] I ask you to come into my heart.

[00:17:58] I make you my Lord and Savior.

[00:18:02] Friends, if you repeated that prayer,

[00:18:04] I believe that you are born again.

[00:18:07] I believe that you are now a member

[00:18:09] of the family of God.

[00:18:10] But friends, that is only the first step.

[00:18:14] What you need to do is look online

[00:18:17] for local churches in your area.

[00:18:21] I suggest that you find a church

[00:18:24] that preaches directly from the Word of God

[00:18:27] and go out and visit one or two of these churches.

[00:18:31] Make yourself available to people inside the church.

[00:18:37] You need to be comfortable

[00:18:39] where you are going to church.

[00:18:41] You need to surround yourself

[00:18:43] with like-minded individuals.

[00:18:46] You are new to the kingdom.

[00:18:48] You are new to the family of God.

[00:18:51] And many churches are going to welcome you

[00:18:54] with open arms.

[00:18:56] Take advantage of that.

[00:18:58] Get to know some of the people.

[00:19:01] Get to know them.

[00:19:02] And they will help you

[00:19:04] as you navigate this new Christian life.

[00:19:08] Now, may the Lord bless you and keep you.

[00:19:12] The Lord make His face shine upon you

[00:19:14] and be gracious to you.

[00:19:16] The Lord lift up His countenance upon you

[00:19:19] and give you peace.

[00:19:21] Friends, this is the weekend.

[00:19:24] Go out somewhere with your spouse.

[00:19:27] Take your kids along with you.

[00:19:29] If it's a beautiful day,

[00:19:31] just go out and enjoy yourselves.

[00:19:33] Whether it's a park, a lake,

[00:19:37] go out for a boat ride.

[00:19:39] Just have some nice quality time

[00:19:43] with your loved ones.

[00:19:46] Remind them of how much God loves them

[00:19:48] and how much you love them.

[00:19:51] And I will see you back on Monday

[00:19:53] as we further explore wisdom today.

[00:19:57] Thank you.

[00:19:58] Thank you.
