Welcome to Wisdom Today with Bill Kelley. Today we will be going over Proverb 1. I will then go over verses 28-33. These verses talk about foolish people who will finally come up with the courage to seek out God, but He will not hear them. We need to seek Him diligently. Verses 33 tells us is we listen to Him (God) and follow His words, that we will dwell safely, And will be secure, without fear of evil. On today's podcast we will go over the 6th Commandment - not to murder. It's very easy to think that we would never do that, but - I believe King David felt that way, too. We will look at the 11th chapter of the Book of 2nd Samuel. King David ends up having an adulteress rendezvous with the wife of Uriah, the Hittite. He tries to cover it up and recalls Uriah from the heat of the battle, but Uriah refuses to go home and sleep with his wife. He then compounds his adultery by having this man murdered. Friends, we need to be satisfied with the wife that God has given us. We need to stay away from things that don't belong to us. Call to Action - Continue for the next three days to give compliments to every single person who crosses your path.
[00:00:06] Welcome to Wisdom Today. My name is Bill Kelley and I'll be your host. In this podcast we will be exploring the book of Proverbs.
[00:00:21] Let's open in prayer. Father God, I thank you for anyone listening to this podcast today. Lord, I pray that you would reveal to everyone listening how much you truly love each and every one of them. I ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.
[00:00:37] This is Proverb 1 beginning in verse 1.
[00:00:42] The Proverbs of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel.
[00:00:47] To know wisdom and instruction. To perceive the words of understanding.
[00:00:54] To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, judgment, and equity.
[00:01:00] To give prudence to the simple. To the young man, knowledge and discretion.
[00:01:06] A wise man will hear and increase learning.
[00:01:10] And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel.
[00:01:15] To understand a proverb and an enigma.
[00:01:19] The words of the wise and their riddles.
[00:01:22] The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.
[00:01:26] But fools despise wisdom and instruction.
[00:01:29] My son, hear the instruction of your father.
[00:01:34] And do not forsake the law of your mother.
[00:01:38] For they will be a graceful ornament on your head and chains about your neck.
[00:01:44] My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent.
[00:01:49] If they say, come with us.
[00:01:52] Let us lie in wait to shed blood.
[00:01:55] Let us lurk secretly for the innocent without cause.
[00:02:00] Let us swallow them alive like sheol.
[00:02:03] And whole like those who go down to the pit.
[00:02:07] We shall find all kinds of precious possessions.
[00:02:11] We shall fill our houses with spoil.
[00:02:14] Cast in your lot among us.
[00:02:18] Let us all have one purse.
[00:02:21] My son, do not walk in the way with them.
[00:02:25] Keep your foot from their path.
[00:02:27] For their feet run to evil.
[00:02:30] And they make haste to shed blood.
[00:02:33] Surely, in vain, the net is spread.
[00:02:37] In the sight of any bird.
[00:02:40] But they lie in wait for their own blood.
[00:02:43] They lurk secretly for their own lives.
[00:02:47] So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain.
[00:02:52] It takes away the life of its owners.
[00:02:56] Wisdom calls aloud outside.
[00:02:59] She raises her voice in the open squares.
[00:03:03] She cries out in the chief concourses.
[00:03:07] At the openings of the gates in the city.
[00:03:09] She speaks her words.
[00:03:12] How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity?
[00:03:17] For scorners delight in their scorning.
[00:03:20] And fools hate knowledge.
[00:03:23] Turn at my rebuke.
[00:03:25] Surely, I will pour out my spirit on you.
[00:03:30] I will make my words known to you.
[00:03:33] Because I have called and you refused.
[00:03:36] I have stretched out my hand and no one regarded.
[00:03:41] Because you disdained all my counsel.
[00:03:44] And would have none of my rebuke.
[00:03:47] I also will laugh at your calamity.
[00:03:50] I will mock when your terror comes.
[00:03:53] When your terror comes like a storm.
[00:03:57] And your destruction comes like a whirlwind.
[00:04:02] When distress and anguish come upon you.
[00:04:06] Then they will call on me.
[00:04:08] But I will not answer.
[00:04:10] They will seek me diligently.
[00:04:12] But they will not find me.
[00:04:14] Because they hated knowledge.
[00:04:16] And did not choose the fear of the Lord.
[00:04:20] They would have none of my counsel.
[00:04:23] And despised my every rebuke.
[00:04:27] Therefore, they shall eat the fruit of their own way.
[00:04:31] And be filled to the full with their own fancies.
[00:04:35] For the turning away of the simple will slay them.
[00:04:40] And the complacency of fools will destroy them.
[00:04:43] But whoever listens to me.
[00:04:46] Will dwell safely.
[00:04:48] And will be secure.
[00:04:51] Without fear of evil.
[00:04:54] Friends.
[00:04:56] We are beginning the book of Proverbs all over again.
[00:05:01] And I always look forward to a new month.
[00:05:04] To be able to do that.
[00:05:06] But today, I am going to key in on the last six verses of Proverb 1.
[00:05:12] Verses 28 through 33.
[00:05:16] And since those are rather lengthy.
[00:05:18] I am going to wait to the end of today's podcast to go over those.
[00:05:23] But we will take a look at those prior to closing today.
[00:05:27] But what I would like to do is to continue our study of the Ten Commandments.
[00:05:33] Which I began a little over a month ago.
[00:05:37] And today, we will be looking at the Sixth Commandment.
[00:05:40] But before we take a look at that commandment.
[00:05:44] I would like to review all ten of the Ten Commandments.
[00:05:50] So the Ten Commandments can be found in the book of Exodus, chapter 20.
[00:05:56] Beginning in verse 2.
[00:05:58] I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.
[00:06:03] Out of the house of bondage.
[00:06:06] And the first commandment begins in verse 3.
[00:06:09] You shall have no other gods before me.
[00:06:13] Commandment number 2 begins in verse 4.
[00:06:17] You shall not make for yourself a carved image.
[00:06:21] Any likeness of anything that is in heaven above.
[00:06:25] Or that is in the earth beneath.
[00:06:28] Or that is in the water under the earth.
[00:06:32] You shall not bow down to them, nor serve them.
[00:06:36] For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God.
[00:06:40] Visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children.
[00:06:44] To the third and fourth generations of those who hate me.
[00:06:50] But showing mercy to thousands.
[00:06:53] To those who love me and keep my commandments.
[00:06:58] In verse 7, we take a look at the third commandment.
[00:07:02] You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
[00:07:06] For the Lord will not hold him guiltless, who takes his name in vain.
[00:07:12] The fourth commandment begins in verse 8.
[00:07:16] Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.
[00:07:20] Six days you shall labor and do all your work.
[00:07:24] But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God.
[00:07:29] In it you shall do no work.
[00:07:31] You, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant,
[00:07:39] nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates.
[00:07:43] For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them.
[00:07:51] And rested the seventh day.
[00:07:54] Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
[00:08:01] The fifth commandment is verse 12.
[00:08:04] Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land,
[00:08:10] which the Lord your God is giving you.
[00:08:13] Verse number 13 is the commandment we'll be going over today.
[00:08:18] The sixth commandment, and it's very simple.
[00:08:21] You shall not murder.
[00:08:23] The 14th verse is the seventh commandment.
[00:08:27] You shall not commit adultery.
[00:08:29] The 15th verse is the eighth commandment.
[00:08:32] You shall not steal.
[00:08:34] Number 16 is the ninth commandment.
[00:08:38] You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
[00:08:42] And verse 17 is the 10th commandment.
[00:08:47] You shall not covet your neighbor's house.
[00:08:50] You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's.
[00:09:05] And friends, I have mentioned this several times since beginning this study is the first five commandments have to do with honoring God and being fearful of God.
[00:09:21] And the last five commandments beginning today have to do with your flesh.
[00:09:28] And friends, if we are loving God and if we are loving our neighbor, then you would not even think about murdering people.
[00:09:43] And the sixth commandment really is pretty simple.
[00:09:47] You shall not murder.
[00:09:48] And a lot of people today would sit there and think, well, I would never murder anyone.
[00:09:54] Well, I want you to think about it.
[00:09:57] I'm going to go to the book of 2 Samuel chapter 11, because when I think of murder, I always think of this story.
[00:10:06] This is King David himself, maybe the greatest king that Israel ever had.
[00:10:13] He is the one who slew the giant Goliath as a youth.
[00:10:18] And then after that, he went and for the king, for King Saul, he was a general in his army and did multiple exploits for the king.
[00:10:31] Winning battle after battle after battle after battle.
[00:10:36] And finally, there came a time when he actually became king.
[00:10:42] And what basically happened, as we'll learn in this story, and I'm going to read the entire 11th chapter of 2 Samuel.
[00:10:51] But basically, in this story, we find out that King David basically got a little bit too comfortable.
[00:11:01] And friends, if you're the king, you can't afford to be comfortable.
[00:11:08] You have to stay in charge of your senses.
[00:11:12] You have to be willing to do the things that kings do.
[00:11:18] So let's begin chapter 11, verse 1.
[00:11:44] Now, Joab was the commander of his army.
[00:11:48] So he's sending his entire army out to fight the battle that David should have been witnessing.
[00:11:58] He should have been involved in it.
[00:12:00] He always had been.
[00:12:02] And all of a sudden, we come to this particular story.
[00:12:06] And for some reason, David let down his guard.
[00:12:11] Let's go to verse 2.
[00:12:12] Then it happened one evening that David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king's house.
[00:12:21] And from the roof, he saw a woman bathing.
[00:12:24] And the woman was very beautiful to behold.
[00:12:28] So David sent and inquired about the woman.
[00:12:32] And someone said,
[00:12:34] Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?
[00:12:41] Then David sent messengers and took her.
[00:12:45] And she came to him, and he lay with her.
[00:12:49] For she was cleansed from her impurity, and she returned to her house.
[00:12:56] And the woman conceived.
[00:12:58] So she sent and told David and said, I am with child.
[00:13:06] So friends, my first point today is you shall not murder.
[00:13:11] My second point today is I am with child.
[00:13:16] So now David is the king of Israel.
[00:13:22] And he has a choice to make here.
[00:13:26] He is the king.
[00:13:28] He is to do good things, righteous things, not things like this.
[00:13:35] Then David sent to Joab saying, send me Uriah the Hittite.
[00:13:42] And Joab sent Uriah to David.
[00:13:45] When Uriah had come to him, David asked how Joab was doing,
[00:13:50] and how the people were doing, and how the war prospered.
[00:13:53] And David said to Uriah, go down to your house and wash your feet.
[00:13:59] So Uriah departed from the king's house,
[00:14:02] and a gift of food from the king followed him.
[00:14:06] But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord,
[00:14:14] and did not go down to his house.
[00:14:17] So when they told David saying, Uriah did not go down to his house.
[00:14:24] David said to Uriah, did you not come from a journey?
[00:14:29] Why did you not go down to your house?
[00:14:32] And Uriah said to David, the ark and Israel and Judah are dwelling in tents.
[00:14:38] And my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are encamped in the open fields.
[00:14:45] Shall I then go to my house to eat and drink and to lie with my wife?
[00:14:51] As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do this thing.
[00:14:59] Oh boy.
[00:15:01] Now David is really in trouble.
[00:15:04] What is he going to do now?
[00:15:08] Then David said to Uriah, wait here today also,
[00:15:14] and tomorrow I will let you depart.
[00:15:17] So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the next.
[00:15:23] Now when David called him, he ate and drank before him.
[00:15:27] And he made him drunk.
[00:15:30] And at evening he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord.
[00:15:35] But he did not go down to his house.
[00:15:39] In the morning it happened that David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah.
[00:15:48] And he wrote in the letter saying,
[00:15:50] Set Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle and retreat from him,
[00:15:58] that he may be struck down and die.
[00:16:01] So it was while Joab besieged the city, that he assigned Uriah to a place where he knew there were valiant men.
[00:16:12] Then the men of the city came out and fought with Joab.
[00:16:16] And some of the people of the servants of David fell.
[00:16:20] And Uriah the Hittite died also.
[00:16:26] Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war.
[00:16:31] And charged the messengers saying,
[00:16:34] When you have finished telling the matters of the war to the king,
[00:16:38] If it happens that the king's wrath rises and he says to you,
[00:16:43] Why did you approach so near to the city when you fought?
[00:16:48] Did you not know that they would shoot from the wall?
[00:16:51] Who struck Abimelech, the son of Jerob Ashef?
[00:16:56] Was it not a woman who cast a piece of a millstone on him from the wall so that he died in Thebes?
[00:17:05] Why did he go near the wall?
[00:17:07] Then you shall say, Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.
[00:17:13] So the messenger went and came and told David all that Joab had sent by him.
[00:17:20] And the messenger said to David,
[00:17:22] Surely the men prevailed against us and came out to us in the field.
[00:17:28] Then we drove them back as far as the entrance of the gate.
[00:17:33] The archers shot from the wall at your servants.
[00:17:37] And some of the king's servants are dead.
[00:17:40] And your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.
[00:17:44] Then David sent to the messenger, Thus you shall say to Joab, Do not let this thing displease you.
[00:17:54] For the sword devours one as well as another.
[00:17:59] Strengthen your attack against the city and overthrow it.
[00:18:03] So encourage him.
[00:18:07] Now friends, I can't help but notice how easy this is for David to put aside.
[00:18:15] I want you to think about it.
[00:18:16] He has just had one of his mighty generals die.
[00:18:22] He's just had him murdered.
[00:18:23] And he is just washing his hands of what he has just done.
[00:18:29] When the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband.
[00:18:38] And when her mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house.
[00:18:44] And she became his wife and bore him a son.
[00:18:48] And he said,
[00:18:54] Now friends, my third and final point of today's lesson.
[00:18:59] When the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband.
[00:19:08] She loved her husband, even though she had sex with the king.
[00:19:16] Of course, if you live in a country that has a king, and if the king calls you into his bedchamber, you are going to sleep with the king.
[00:19:29] She felt she didn't have any choice.
[00:19:31] But it wasn't because she loved him.
[00:19:34] It was because she thought that if she said no, there might be a very good chance she might have been killed.
[00:19:43] She didn't feel she had any choice.
[00:19:46] But she absolutely loved her husband.
[00:19:52] So we have murder here.
[00:19:54] And we also have adultery.
[00:19:56] We have a child that is born out of this union.
[00:20:01] But many of you know that child ended up dying.
[00:20:05] And then they had another child who became King Solomon.
[00:20:13] And obviously, he is the writer of the majority of the book of Proverbs.
[00:20:19] So, before we close today, I would like to go back to our Proverb of the Day.
[00:20:26] And since it is the first of November today, I am going to go over verses 28 through 33.
[00:20:34] Then they will call on me, but I will not answer.
[00:20:39] They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me.
[00:20:43] And friends, this is God himself talking.
[00:20:46] Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the Lord, they would have none of my counsel and despised my every rebuke.
[00:21:00] Therefore, they shall eat the fruit of their own way and be filled to the full with their own fancies.
[00:21:08] And friends, this is what happens when you do not know the Lord.
[00:21:14] You are going to eat the fruit of your own way.
[00:21:19] And I have mentioned this often lately.
[00:21:22] Galatians 6-7
[00:21:24] Be not deceived. God is not mocked.
[00:21:27] Whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap.
[00:21:32] Then it says,
[00:21:33] For the turning away of the simple will slay them.
[00:21:36] And the complacency of fools will destroy them.
[00:21:40] But I really like verse 33.
[00:21:42] But whoever listens to me, and this is wisdom itself talking, will dwell safely and will be secure without fear of evil.
[00:21:56] Now friends, I am reading out of the Nelson Study Bible.
[00:22:00] And I really would like to delve into the commentary for these five verses.
[00:22:07] I will not answer.
[00:22:08] When fools despise wisdom, they must face the results of their choice.
[00:22:16] Their hatred for wisdom arises out of a refusal to fear God.
[00:22:22] Verses 31 and 32 pick up the theme of verse 19 from the parents' instruction.
[00:22:29] Fools bring about their own destruction.
[00:22:34] Rejection of wisdom will slay them.
[00:22:38] This dismal warning ends with a promise of life to the few who will listen.
[00:22:45] They will find safety and ease.
[00:22:48] So friends, it's very simple.
[00:22:51] Receive Jesus as your Lord and Savior.
[00:22:54] Choose to serve God in all that you do.
[00:22:59] Acquire wisdom no matter how much effort it takes.
[00:23:04] Do the right thing over and over again.
[00:23:11] Friends, we do not need to murder anyone.
[00:23:15] If we love God and if we love our neighbor, we won't even consider ever doing that.
[00:23:25] Friends, my call to action today, I'm going to continue where I picked up on Wednesday's podcast.
[00:23:32] And that is to pay a compliment to everyone you come across the next three days.
[00:23:41] Look for an opportunity.
[00:23:44] Look for something you can say to encourage them, to build them up, every single person, and see if you do not receive positive results.
[00:23:57] Friends, I will never end a podcast without giving anyone an opportunity to receive Jesus as their Lord and Savior.
[00:24:06] If there is anyone listening today and you've never taken that step, I invite you to repeat a simple prayer after me right now.
[00:24:14] Jesus, I confess that I am a sinner and in need of a Savior.
[00:24:19] I ask that you come into my heart.
[00:24:21] I make you my Lord and Savior.
[00:24:24] Friends, that's all you have to do.
[00:24:27] You are now a member of the family of God.
[00:24:31] Congratulations.
[00:24:32] Now, may the Lord bless you and keep you.
[00:24:36] The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you.
[00:24:40] The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace.
[00:24:45] Friends, this is the weekend.
[00:24:49] Take your spouse out.
[00:24:50] Take your kids out.
[00:24:51] Have a nice family time.
[00:24:53] Let them know how much God loves them and how much you love them.
[00:24:58] And I will see you back on Monday morning as we further explore wisdom today.
