Welcome to Wisdom Today with Bill Kelley. Today we will be going over Proverb 23. I will then introduce you to my special guest for the day, Louise Van Kirk. Louise will share her personal testimony. Louise's son, Ian, married my daughter - so she is like family to me. You won't want to miss this!
[00:00:06] Welcome to Wisdom Today. My name is Bill Kelley and I'll be your host. In this podcast, we will be exploring the book of Proverbs. Father God, I thank you for anyone listening to this podcast today. Lord, I pray that you give everyone listening.
[00:00:29] Here's to hear and a heart to receive everything you have in store for them today. I ask this in Jesus' name, Amen. This is Proverbs 23, beginning in verse 1.
[00:00:44] When you sit down to eat with a ruler, consider carefully what is before you and put a knife to your throat if you are a man given to appetite.
[00:00:55] Do not desire his delicacies for they are deceptive food. Do not overwork to be rich because of your own understanding, cease. Will you set your eyes on that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings. They fly away like an eagle toward heaven.
[00:01:19] Do not eat the bread of a miser nor desire his delicacies for as he thinks in his heart so is hate. Eat and drink, he says to you but his heart is not with you. The morsel you have eaten, you will vomit up and waste your pleasant words.
[00:01:42] Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, for he will despise the wisdom of your words. Do not remove the ancient landmark nor enter the fields of the Fatherless. For their redeemer is mighty. He will plead their cause against you.
[00:02:01] Apply your heart to instruction and your ears towards the knowledge. Do not withhold correction from a child. For if you beat him with a rod, he will not die. You shall beat him with a rod and deliver his soul from hell.
[00:02:21] My son, if your heart is wise, my heart will rejoice. Indeed I myself. Yes, my inmost being will rejoice when your lips speak right things. Do not let your heart and be sinners but be zealous for the fear of the Lord all the day.
[00:02:43] For surely there is a hear after and your hope will not be cut off. Hear my son and be wise and guide your heart in the way. Do not mix with wine bivers or with gluttonous eaters of meat for the drumgird and the glutton will come to poverty and drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.
[00:03:11] Listen to your father who begot you and do not despise your mother when she is old. Buy the truth and do not sell it. Also wisdom and instruction and understanding.
[00:03:27] The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice and he who begots a wise child will delight in him. Let your father and your mother be glad and let her who bore you rejoice.
[00:03:42] My son give me your heart and let your eyes observe my ways for a harlot is a deep pit and a seductress is a narrow wealth. She also lies in weight as for a victim and increases the unfaithful among men. Who has woe, who has sorrow, who has contentions, who has complaints?
[00:04:12] Who has woe, without cause? Who has redness of eyes? Those who linger long at the wine? Those who go in search of an next wine? Do not look on the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it swirls around smoothly.
[00:04:35] At the last it bites like a serpent and stings like a viper. Your eyes will see strange things and your heart will utter perverse things. Yes, you will be like one who lies down in the midst of the sea or like one who lies at the top of the mast saying, they have struck me but I was not hurt. They have beaten me but I did not feel it.
[00:05:05] When shall I awake that I may seek another drink? Friends, I have a treat. I have Louise Van Kirk and Louise I have wanted to interview you for quite some time because we're like family. Your son married my daughter and I think that's kind of neat and we really haven't had an opportunity to spend much time together but I'm really looking forward to hearing your testimony and what you have to do.
[00:05:35] We have just gone over, probably 23 and there are a number of verses that we could talk about but Louise which one spoke to you today that you would like to share with the audience.
[00:05:49] Thanks, Bill. This is really a pleasure. The scripture that jumps out of me this morning is verse 26 and this is in the amplified but it says, my son give me your heart and let your eyes observe and delight in my waves.
[00:06:09] Well, that has been the story of my life since I got saved. I have delighted in the Lord. I've given him my heart as well as I could and walked with him and delighted in him all these years and he's been so faithful.
[00:06:30] Yes, Louise he always is faithful and Louise many people may not know who you are listening to this today. So if you would go back to your early childhood and talk a little bit about your upbringing and your church experience.
[00:06:46] Okay, well I was raised a little Catholic girl born and raised and even when I was a little girl.
[00:06:55] I would sense the presence of God in my life and but in the Catholic church way back then there was no Bible study. There was no learning the words so by the time I became of age to just rebel, I was 16 and that was it on going to church for me.
[00:07:19] And so I just fell away completely from from the Lord and let's just go into all kinds of trouble looked into all the things that the world had to offer when I was about 16 and really went down from there.
[00:07:40] Wow, okay if you let's go into a little bit more detail exactly what does that look like so you're 16 so are you a sophomore or a junior in high school at this point. I was a junior. Okay. And I.
[00:07:56] God, we had just moved to Florida from New Hampshire so I was with all strangers and at that age. It's really tough to not have grown up with people and to fit in.
[00:08:10] And so I got in with the wrong people and got into drugs, alcohol, all the things that kids do that don't know the Lord and have no boundaries. And so I graduated at 17 and really continued along that path. And this was 1970 in the thick of the hippie movement.
[00:08:40] Okay, Louise stop let me stop your right there. Tell count going a little more detail what does that mean to you? This was in the middle of the hippie movement so so go on. Well, you know the old saying drug sex and rock and roll all of it.
[00:08:57] I just. We came and thrall with my friends and all that they were doing which is that you know rock concerts. Throwing away any restraints at all and.
[00:09:15] And he was in to the whole party scene and but the thing is I became addicted to everything everybody doesn't but I was one that became addicted to all the.
[00:09:27] All the drugs and alcohol and so I just went down and looked into all the eastern religions because that was the cool thing to do not because I was looking for God. I just got more and more lost okay, Louise. I'm going to go to Paul's.
[00:09:47] Letter to the Romans in chapter 12 if we listen to verses one and two this is what it says. I besieged you there for brethren by the mercies of God that you present your bodies a living sacrifice.
[00:10:03] Holy acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service and do not be conformed to this world. But be transformed by the renewing of your mind that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
[00:10:23] Now Louise it sounds like you're doing the opposite of what the Bible says when did you come to the realization that something in your life had to change and tell us why.
[00:10:37] Well when you're messing with your body that way I never ate I smoke three packs of cigarettes a day because I never slept because the drugs I did were speed and.
[00:10:53] It's the doctor's in downers and so I began to have panic attacks if I didn't do the drugs. So it was a vicious cycle now I was a hairdresser and I was able to work because you don't have to be what we called straight to do air.
[00:11:14] I made money to cover my drugs and then other people gave me things and gave me drugs. And so being so uncomfortable and so panicky when I was not drugs made me even more panicky,
[00:11:34] realizing I needed a way out of this but I was helpless to do anything. Alright, Louise. I'm going to go back to Scripture and Paul's letter to the Philippians in chapter 4. It says, be anxious for nothing but in everything by prayer and supplication with Thanksgiving,
[00:11:57] let your requests be made known to God and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Once again, Louise, you're kind of on a different scale. Okay, the word of God tells us we should be going in one
[00:12:20] direction and you are still running away from God. When did you realize you had a need for Jesus? And when did that happen? Well, I knew I needed a need for something. I didn't really
[00:12:37] know that it was Jesus because my eyes were blinded and when people tried to talk to us about Jesus we call them Jesus freaks around away. I had no inkling that this was the truth and this is
[00:12:51] what I needed. But eventually when I got solo, I know God sent me someone and when she would speak this was someone I worked with. When she would speak, I would soften and tear up and that
[00:13:11] was so weird to me but I know it was the Holy Spirit and I was drawing to her and I was drawing to what her life was like. And so I knew she kept inviting me to church and she did give me a book
[00:13:28] called God Calling. I would read that book at night and cry in my beer and something was softening in my heart and so I knew I should go to church with her. She kept inviting me and it
[00:13:43] took about a month and finally I felt like I could be sober enough to go to church. I didn't know what it was like because all I knew was the Catholic ritualistic church and so I went and I thought
[00:14:02] I looked around these people were and Morocco's and tambourines in the aisles and I thought, wow, these people must really know God or they wouldn't be acting like this and she kept saying
[00:14:15] I know you're going to get saved. I know you're going to get saved and I thought well, I don't even know what get saved means but I really don't want to disappoint her but I just
[00:14:25] stayed in that service and observed and I know the overwhelming feeling I had that I'll never forget was I want to be like all those clean people. I want to be like that, I want to be clean and so I
[00:14:46] stood there with my eyes closed and I had vision and it was Jesus standing up on a cobblestone hill stairway and his arms were reached out to me and I'll never forget it of course
[00:15:06] I was 23 and now I'm 70, I'll never forget that and I never looked back but at the end of this service it was easy. The pastor said if you want to make Jesus your savior stand up and say I take Jesus as
[00:15:22] my savior and I was very shy back then but I did it and from then on all the shackles fell off, the blinders came off my eyes. I saw the truth and the truth set me free and I've never been the same
[00:15:40] I'm as touched now as I was then at the goodness of God in the land of the living. Well Louise that's really good I'm going to go back to the book of Romans and in chapter eight
[00:15:53] in verse six it says to be carnally minded is death but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Now at that time would that verse have made any sense to you and how has that verse changed
[00:16:12] your life since then? Well my mind was totally renewed that day even though I didn't know the word I had life and the amplified says heart peace. I had life and heart peace from that day on
[00:16:34] and of course I got into the word I was deciphered well I listened to sermons and my mind was renewed with the living word and like the scripture says I had that living
[00:16:51] that life and peace. Well that's so good I'm going to go Louise and I'm going to ask you a simple question describe to the audience what happened to you when you gave your life to Jesus and is
[00:17:10] that the most important decision that you've ever made? Oh yes definitely the most important decision what happened to me really was like what happened to Paul the skills felt from my eyes. I saw the truth
[00:17:27] and I thought wow this is really life this is what life's all about and like I say I've never looked back. Well that's so good and for those of you not aware of what Louise just mentioned she's talking
[00:17:42] about the book of Acts chapter nine and then this is where a Saul of Tarsus and Saul was one of the worst people offenders of Christianity at that time Louise and what happened was the spirit of Jesus
[00:17:57] actually knocked Paul Saul of Tarsus at this time off of his donkey and his eyes were blinded for three days and his friends brought him into the city of Damascus so for three days he was blind
[00:18:13] but when Ananias prayed over him you're talking about the scales fell off of him that's what this reminds me of what you just discussed and immediately Paul went and started preaching the
[00:18:28] gospel did that happened to you. You know what it really did my husband was not saved when I got saved and so we still had a lot of friends that were on believers and I guess people just saw the
[00:18:51] change in me and I just would quickly share everything that happened to me as good as I could because I didn't know the work yet but the Holy Spirit was there with me all the time and so all the girls got
[00:19:06] saved all the guys' lives got saved and so yes I wanted to share the truth because I thought well everybody needs to know this. Louise that's really good and that brings up a good point
[00:19:25] because Jesus tells us that we are to go into the world and we are to preach the Word of God and show God's goodness to all creatures that's what it says in Marx Gospel but Louise as a
[00:19:39] hairdresser you had the opportunity to talk to many people on a daily basis if you would just kind of talk about how you made the transition that all of a sudden you're starting to talk to the people who
[00:19:54] came in to get their her fix well my life was on and you know I didn't want to be anyone over the head and harden their heart so as God made pathways into some of my clients I knew them well
[00:20:13] um it just said wait into salvation one lady I remember I led her to the Lord in the bathroom at JC Penney's hair styling salon and another one like it was really weird right in front of the
[00:20:34] checkout desk I was able to I kept sharing my testimony with her and that one segue into salvation she asked more and ended up saved so throughout and of course praying for healing for people
[00:20:56] throughout I mean I did hear for 45 years so some of the my test money's death failed with what was going on in my life at home so God opened doors and brought me the right people that's all I know
[00:21:11] wow that's really good and I'm gonna go to John's book of Revelation in chapter 12 verse 11 Louise it says and they overcome by the blood of the lamb and the word of our testimony Louise this is
[00:21:26] one of the reasons why I have started this podcast and when I did start immediately after starting this podcast the Holy Spirit woke me up in the middle of the night and he said I want you to
[00:21:39] have testimonies on Tuesday and one of the things Louise is you need to be obedient to what the word of God says and if you are truly seeking God the Holy Spirit who is the great teacher
[00:21:55] he's the best teacher there is and a lot of people sometimes mistakenly say that's Jesus but Jesus sat there and said before his time was come and he said I will send you the comforter so although
[00:22:09] the words of Jesus are powerful and I believe the most important words of the Bible before he left he wanted his disciples to know that the Holy Spirit will come and live inside of each one of
[00:22:27] us who'd call upon the name of the Lord so Louise how did that happen to you and your testimony that is what draws people so if you would just clarify a little bit more about
[00:22:42] how you continued to draw people to Jesus well like testimonies of healing in my life for one thing my son being healed of epilepsy I was very fortunate as soon as I got saved I was
[00:23:04] what we call back then a word church I was I was in a church that taught the word taught you carefully to walk in the word taught you carefully to speak the word and what negative words
[00:23:19] will bring in your life so my son developed grandma seizures at four years old and I have a great testimony of how God actually healed him after seven years during that seven
[00:23:36] years I had to walk the walk and I trusted God they told me he would not outgrow this but God gave me a sword and he said he will outgrow it and I want you to stand on that and so I did
[00:23:52] if I had to tell someone that my son as epilepsy so he has medicine I would say he for example at school I would say he has epilepsy he's outgrowing it and I didn't talk about it otherwise he is a
[00:24:09] healthy fine child well in that after seven years I remember well I was at a ladies Christmas party from church and God just spoke to me when we were worshiping he said
[00:24:26] your son is healed this is my Christmas present to you I thought that was I thought no one's ever been believed this well he and had a doctor's appointment and we went and the doctor took him
[00:24:39] off all medicine now you don't do that with epilepsy they win them off and they put him in the hospital to win them off but he took him off all medicine we didn't know any better and nothing
[00:24:51] happened so when we went back to the doctor he said I gulped and said a prayer when I was recording my notes because we don't do that and from then on our son was healed the epilepsy he never had
[00:25:05] another seizure so that was healing so I was able then God would bring me people that had children with epilepsy or other illnesses and that was a testimony I shared and there are many more like
[00:25:24] that I raised my kids by myself as a believer my husband was not a believer he was adamantly opposed but through it all God just brought me through so many places that we say a rock in a hard place
[00:25:41] I get before God he'd bring me through and so we had many testimonies and the three of us served God together until my husband got saved 18 years ago the kids were grown so through all those years God can use anybody even a woman alone raising her kids
[00:26:05] we may not know any better but the Holy Spirit inside of us knows exactly what we can do to spread his love his light his faithfulness he can use all of us no matter what situation we're in
[00:26:25] while Louise you bring up such a good point and and one of the things I want to emphasize is for anyone listening today who is going through that and you are married and you have been saved
[00:26:40] and your spouse still has not been saved Louise I know that must have been very difficult for you but what I really want to stress to the audience is your relationship with God is of utmost importance
[00:26:55] it is the most important relationship you can have and I know many people Louise who are married think their spouse comes first but we're here and I'm here to discuss and I want you to clarify
[00:27:12] this your relationship with God easily trumps that relationship if you truly love God and understand who he is and his love for you that will enable us to be a better spouse a better child,
[00:27:29] a better parent, a better worker, a better boss, a better everything so everything works out of the relationship we have with God if you would Louise just go over that with the audience your personal
[00:27:47] feelings on that well that is the truth that's where the capital T that is the most important thing and even when my my first born was which is my son was very little I knew that not only did I
[00:28:09] need the presence of God in my life I loved the presence of God it was everything to me everything and so I remember spreading out a blanket and just getting getting my little baby on the blanket
[00:28:27] and kneeling there and reading the word and worshiping God and praying I I was a new believer and so I don't know what made me do this except the Holy Spirit so when I did that I heard the voice of
[00:28:45] the Lord say do this every day and in the mornings and so I did in the mornings I had my place on the floor that I would always spend time with the Lord I just spend time with the Lord with my best friend my love
[00:29:05] I was passionate about spending time with the Lord so in that in those times when I said it felt like a rock in a hard place I saw that rock wall and I cried out to God and so he delivered me I mean
[00:29:23] the Bible says if you set your love upon me I will deliver you I set my love upon him and we didn't miss church that was one thing I told my husband I am raising my children for the
[00:29:40] Lord there is nothing that you can do to me that will stop that because I never wanted my children to go through what I went through I wanted them to know the truth as early as possible and so
[00:29:53] we served God together and seeking God first was everything to me so and you have to rain that in as you get older in the Lord you begin to think oh I've got this and you begin to walk in your
[00:30:12] own strength and you can't do that we never can feel like we've arrived never even when we're older we just have to keep drawing letting God draw us back to that secret place and that secret we
[00:30:26] have with God it's life for the rest of our life and even now in these difficult times there is so much evil in the world that we will begin to embrace some of the lives if we don't stay before
[00:30:42] God and stay in the work. Well Louise that's so good you bring up so many good points but I'm going to go to proper 226 where it says train of a child in the way they should go and when they are
[00:30:56] older they will not depart from it Louise we are in the stage of life where we don't only have kids we have grandkids as well and how important is that verse to you and to how that now that you
[00:31:11] have grandkids that you have spoken into their lives having to do with that verse okay well I just had them walk with me um I felt it was so important they just as we as we went by the way as we stood
[00:31:32] up as we lay down like the scripture says we talked about how this is pertinent to the word of God even in nature we would talk about well God did this and this and um I just always brought them back
[00:31:51] to what the word says because I was taught young that the word is alive I was taught early in my walk that's words alive even in church when I first had babies I brought them in church with me
[00:32:07] and I believed the word would deliver them would give them life I'd lay them on the floor even when they were little babies I just felt their spirit would be touched and so we just did life together
[00:32:22] I'll just say that when we we watched as Christians I told them we were a Christian family and that's that's just how we did life well Louise I'm going to go to second Timothy chapter three
[00:32:36] verses 16 and 17 some of you may not be familiar with these two verses but I just want to get across to those people who are not strong Christians because these verses are so powerful it's as all
[00:32:52] scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine for reproof for correction for instruction in righteousness that the man of God may be complete thoroughly equipped for every good work Louise how powerful are those two verses to you and Louise you I have been
[00:33:20] known as a prayer warrior so what I'd like for you to incorporate those two verses and how do you go about praying for people that you know who need Jesus and how you know use those two verses
[00:33:35] okay so I am not like you Bill I know a lot of the word but I can't just say we're exactly that is because for one thing I don't have a teaching gift that's not a gift thing but
[00:33:55] addressing the devil addressing issues in someone's life just began to come so natural to me when naturally when someone would ask me for prayer I would find I would blow into this super woman
[00:34:14] I would the scripture that they needed the word of wisdom and the knowledge and the discernment would come into play so powerfully and I would I was able to address issues and demons and darkness
[00:34:35] without fear and in the power of God and so it just happened naturally that I began to flow in that annoying thing really the annoying thing that breaks the yoke of bondage just because I was
[00:34:50] my gift and it just flowed naturally now just because I don't know exactly where a scripture is when I needed it it came out so I did constantly and do constantly feed myself the word
[00:35:07] feed my spirit the word and it it will come out when I need it and when someone else needs it and for there for God to reach out to a hurt and suffering world that inside me was my heart
[00:35:25] cry so that's the Holy Spirit using this mortal being in the world. Well Louise that's so good and in the book of Ephesians Paul tells us in chapter four that he has called some to be apostles some prophets some evangelists some pastors and some
[00:35:47] teachers like you said Louise you may not be in the fivefold ministry you know my gift happens to be teaching but we are all called to be able ministers every single one of us so what are your thoughts
[00:36:05] on that and what do you do about that? Well I just take what comes before me really I that's what that's what I like now I do hone my skills so to speak by studying up on prayer and
[00:36:24] attending prayer workshops or studying the miracles of Jesus in recent years on healing and but mostly I'm a willing vessel and whatever God puts before me now I do seem to have a gift of
[00:36:43] exhitation I love to encourage people not to be discouraged and because God has been so faithful in my life over all these years and see that's what I think is so important that the old guard stays strong
[00:37:03] and doesn't sit in the back of the church and just playing games and playing golf and never keeping tuned into the body of Christ the world and the new believers that we have now need the truth
[00:37:20] that we possess because the world is full of lies they need the real truth of the gospel so much of it has been crossed out and said that's not for today or whatever but we know the truth
[00:37:35] and we need to stay on top of it for the next generation because that makes sense yeah that's so good and you know I'm going to go to Isaiah chapter six and Isaiah is one of the greatest prophets of all
[00:37:48] time and in chapter six you know God came to Isaiah and Isaiah said Lord here am I send me and Isaiah was a willing prophet and he went about doing that but Louise let's switch gears for just
[00:38:05] a moment as a grandparent how important is it to you that your two kids and your grandkids are all going to church and living a Christian life well that is the best isn't it? it's really
[00:38:25] it's wonderful to see fruit that remains and our kids are raising their children for the Lord and so you know it's it's just well the wonderful thing also is when your children marry well
[00:38:43] and they marry a believer that is that is a wonderful gift and so of course when when they're raising their children for the Lord it is wonderful because you can address those children you can continue
[00:38:58] that when you're going about with your grandchildren and we're able to talk about the Lord and they know what we're talking about and that's we can impart and that is that's just the best
[00:39:16] well that's so good Louise and we're at the stage of our lives that we can start thinking about creating a legacy and what does that word mean to you and how would you like where you are
[00:39:31] to be remembered is when it comes to your kids and grandkids and shortly to be great grandkids. well I love that our daughter is a minister and a powerful minister and as far as
[00:39:53] as and our son is a very gifted he does the sound at church and has a good ear for it his he really enjoys doing the cram meetings but a so our kids are are ministering and useful
[00:40:16] in the kingdom I'm expecting more and more from the grandkids more tentacles reaching out to the world and that is what like intimacy your grandmother I would love it if our children remember what we loved and what we taught and what our life was about as being kingdom
[00:40:47] minded not about being worldly minded and all the things we loved in the world but being kingdom minded so that you know I'm just believing it will go on and on from here.
[00:41:02] Well that's so good Louise and the verse you're referring to he tells Timothy stir up the gift that is within you stir it up and Louise we have been given a gift we've been given that
[00:41:17] gift a salvation but Louise we're near closing times so if you would I'm just going to give you a couple moments to share with those in the audience who may not yet have received Jesus as
[00:41:31] their Lord and Savior so what I'd like for you to do is just think about those people that are on the fence and they've never done that what would you say to those people and encourage them
[00:41:44] about the importance of having Jesus in their life. Well let me tell you this whatever you have now and you're on the fence I want to encourage you to step over that fence and leave that
[00:42:03] trash behind because you will see you'll see the light you'll see the truth your eyes will be open you'll see the truth of what's real in this world and you will be set free so
[00:42:20] right now wherever you are close your eyes and just think what is my life it's really it's really nothing and stand up and say I take Jesus as my Savior let go of the past let go of the sins
[00:42:42] and tell Jesus forgive me in my past and just just do it let your eyes be open just try it taste and see and you'll see the Lord is good and he will give you a life that's worth living
[00:43:05] well that's so good and some 37 it says delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart Louise I'm going to ask you one more favor if you would go ahead and lead
[00:43:19] people in the sinner's prayer and invite them into the kingdom of God so Father we love you and we're so grateful for all you have done in our lives and I pray for those Lord that
[00:43:37] they're just be wilderness lost I pray God that you by your spirit would touch their lives whoever's listening whoever's crying out for help I pray for you and I ask you to just lay aside your sin lay aside all those things that are keeping you from accepting Jesus
[00:44:09] and just say I take Jesus as my Savior I thank you Lord for your faithfulness in every life that can hear this I extend the love of God the peace of God the comfort of God for all these
[00:44:32] people and I thank you Lord for a new day as they walk in you a new light and also I want to encourage you a very important thing is to get with other believers the Bible says we are
[00:44:48] one joint supplying another and iron sharpening iron so you want to get with other believers and we are praying that other believers will come across your path and you can latch on it'll be the
[00:45:04] right people it'll be the right person and it'll be the right community for you latch on to that get a Bible there are Bibles everywhere in America and if you are not in America I pray that
[00:45:21] a Bible will come across your path that is the living word and the Word of God to you to live your life and the instructions for life blessings to everyone in Jesus name
