573. Gospel of Luke - Chapter 9 (#1) - Some People Will Not Hear the Good News - June 12, 2024

Welcome to Wisdom Today with Bill Kelley. Today we will be going over Proverb 12. I will then go over verse 26 - The righteous should choose his friends carefully, For the way of the wicked leads them astray. Friends, as followers of Christ we should choose fellow Christians as our closest friends. If we choose otherwise we may be tempted to do things we should not be doing. On today's podcast we will see Jesus sending out His 12 disciples to preach the Gospel and to heal the sick. By the end of this lesson, there are three things that I ask that you consider:

1. Jesus sent His disciples out to preach the Gospel & to heal the sick.

2. Take nothing for the journey.

3. Some people will not receive the message you bring.

During this podcast I also brought up two very important scriptures everyone should be familiar with: Hebrews 13:8; & John 14:12

Call to Action - Ask yourself if you are a disciple ( a true follower) of Jesus, or simply a convert of Jesus (one who said the sinner's prayer, but doesn't do anything with it)?

[00:00:06] and I'll be your host. In this podcast, we will be exploring the book of Proverbs. Soap an impraier. Father God, I thank you for anyone listening to this podcast today.

[00:00:27] Lord, I pray that you give everyone ears to hear and a heart to receive everything you have in store for them today. I ask this in Jesus name, Amen. This is proper 12 beginning in verse 1. Whoever loves instruction loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid.

[00:00:50] A good man obtains favor from the Lord that a man of wicked intentions he will condemn. Amen is not established by wickedness, but the root of the righteous cannot be moved.

[00:01:05] An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, but she who causes shame is like rottenness in his bones. The thoughts of the righteous are right, but the councils of the wicked are deceitful.

[00:01:20] The words of the wicked are lie in weight for blood, but the mouth of the upright will deliver them. The wicked are overthrown and are no more, but the house of the righteous will stand.

[00:01:36] Amen will be commended according to his wisdom, but he who is of a perverse heart will be despised. Better is the one who is slided but has a servant than he who honors himself that lacks bread.

[00:01:54] A righteous man regards the life of his animal, but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel. He who kills his land will be satisfied with bread, but he who follows, forvolunty, is devoid of understanding.

[00:02:13] The wicked covet the catch of evil man, but the root of the righteous yields fruit. The wicked is ensnared by the transgression of his lips, that the righteous will come through trouble.

[00:02:29] Amen will be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth and the recompense of a man's hands will be rendered to him. The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, that he who heads counsel is wise.

[00:02:47] A fool's wrath is known at once, but a prudent man covers shame. He who speaks truth declares righteousness, that a false witness deceit. There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword, but the tongue of the wise promotes health.

[00:03:10] The truthful lip shall be established forever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment. Decide is in the heart of those who devise evil, the counselors of peace have joy. No grave trouble will overtake the righteous, but the wicked shall be filled with evil.

[00:03:35] Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who deal truthfully are his delight. A prudent man can seal's knowledge that the heart of fools proclaims foolishness. The hand of the diligent will rule that the lazy man will be put to forced labor.

[00:03:59] Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, but a good word makes it loud. The righteous should choose his friends carefully, for the way of the wicked leads them astray. The lazy man does not roast what he took in hunting, but diligence is man's precious possession.

[00:04:23] In the way of righteousness is life, and in its pathway there is no death. Friends today I'd like to take a closer look at verse 26, and proper 12 verse 26 says this. The righteous should choose his friends carefully, for the way of the wicked leads them astray.

[00:04:51] Friends we will take a closer look at that verse prior to closing today, but what I'd like to do is begin this lesson in chapter 9 of Luke. Now we have been in Luke for probably a little over two months now.

[00:05:07] I spend about four or five separate podcasts on each chapter, and each of these chapters so far has been absolutely wonderful.

[00:05:19] Luke is a good place to start. If you are not aware of the Bible and you're not used to reading it, it is a very good book because Luke did a lot of research.

[00:05:33] Now Luke never met Jesus. He wasn't one of his disciples, and yet he wrote a gospel because he was so impressed with everything that he had heard about this man when he walked on the earth.

[00:05:49] He later became very close associates with the Apostle Paul. So he was in good company when he was on earth, but he was a doctor and so he was very thorough in all of the information gathered.

[00:06:04] But the gospel of Luke is probably a bit more comprehensive than any of the other gospels. So let's begin chapter 9 of Luke beginning in verse 1.

[00:06:19] Then he called his 12 disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.

[00:06:38] And friends, that is my first point today. Jesus sent his disciples out to preach the gospel and heal the sick. Now friends, I am going to make a statement that some of you may find interesting.

[00:06:59] We are to be disciples of Jesus. And what a disciple is, is a follower. So Jesus had 12 people who followed him closely almost everywhere he went on earth for three and a half years.

[00:07:20] But each of us has made the decision to receive Jesus in to our heart. Now there may be a few people listening today and have not yet made that decision.

[00:07:33] And if you have never made that decision, I will give an invitation in a few moments. But if you have made that decision and receive Jesus into your heart, we are to be followers of what he did.

[00:07:51] Let's listen to verse 1 and 2 again. He called his 12 disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases. Now friends, this should be our call today as well.

[00:08:12] We have the power and the authority over demons and we have the ability to cure diseases. Let me give you a couple scriptures that highlight what I just said in the book of Hebrews chapter 13 verse 8, this is what it says.

[00:08:37] Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. What that means is Jesus is alive today. Now he came back and he rose from the dead and for 40 days Jesus was on earth and 40 days later on the day of pentacost Jesus rose and ascended in to heaven.

[00:09:07] As the disciples watched him and he descended into heaven and he is at the right hand of God the Father. But he rose from the dead and is alive today.

[00:09:22] So if Jesus were to take let's say an airplane flight from heaven to earth and he came today just to see what his disciples were doing. He would be telling us the same exact thing that he told his disciples.

[00:09:40] Now let me go to the gospel of John chapter 4 and read verse 12. Truly truly and whatever Jesus begins a verse with truly truly he means listen carefully to what I'm about to say this is what you are to do.

[00:10:04] I say to you who ever believes in me will also do the works that I do and greater works than these will he do because I go to the Father.

[00:10:21] Now let's go back to verse 3 and here the actual words that Jesus instructed the disciples of that day to do and he said to them take nothing for the journey.

[00:10:39] Neither staff nor bag nor bread nor money and do not have two tunics a piece. So friends the second point I'd like to bring up today is take nothing for the journey.

[00:10:58] Now in the book of first Peter it says always be ready to give an account for the hope that is in you. In other words friends we need to be ready to share the gospel in season and out of season you never know when you are going to have an opportunity to share the good news of the gospel.

[00:11:25] You need to be prepared at any moment to talk to any individual that you meet. You never know when the time will arise when God is going to call on you to be his representative.

[00:11:42] Let's go to verse 4 whatever house you enter stay there and from there depart and whoever will not receive you when you go out of that city.

[00:11:58] Shake off the very dust from your feet as a testimony against them and friends the third point I want to bring up today is that some people will not receive the message you bring.

[00:12:18] And that is such a vital point because many people when they receive Jesus as their Lord and Savior they are gung ho. It's almost like they are ready for the world series and they are the cleanup hitter and you feel it's my time I am going to do all I can to bring as many souls into the kingdom of God.

[00:12:48] And friends the bottom line is we need to have discernment. In other words you need to pray and ask God Lord should I talk to this person and share the good news with them because some people simply are not going to want to hear what you have to say.

[00:13:13] And friends my wife and I graduated from Keras Bible College a little bit over a year ago we graduated on May 13th and part of the requirement for that second year in order to graduate is that we had to go on a mission trip.

[00:13:35] We had never been to Alaska I thought it would be fun for us to go there it would be an opportunity to meet different people and share the gospel and this was our mission.

[00:13:50] There were people that did not want to hear what we did a matter of fact we met a number of people that did not hear what we wanted to bring to them.

[00:14:05] And friends we cannot take offense when that happens we need to be okay and you need to be ready to move on to the next person and share the good news with them. We cannot be discouraged if someone rejects the message that we want to bring.

[00:14:28] Friends before we close today I'd like to go back to our proverb of the day and today we are in proverb 12 and I often try to find a verse in scripture with somewhat parallels the lesson of the day.

[00:14:47] And verse 26 says the righteous should choose his friends carefully for the way of the wicked leads them astray and friends the comparison I'm going to make with this verse and our story today is the fact that Jesus sent out his disciples to preach the gospel.

[00:15:11] And let's go back and hear what he said he said and whoever will not receive you when you go out of that city shake off the very dust from your feet as a testimony against them now let's look at this verse the righteous should choose his friends carefully.

[00:15:38] So friends what I'm suggesting is that we have discernment we are to choose our friends mainly from fellow believers in God and followers of Christ those are the people who should be our closest associates.

[00:16:04] God want to be with people who reject God and his message or his son Jesus those are not the people that we should be spending the most of our time with.

[00:16:19] The second part for the way of the wicked leads them astray and friends that is so vitally important if you hang out with the wrong people you may end up following them as opposed to following Jesus.

[00:16:42] So friends my call to action today it's a very simple question but it's one I want everyone to consider carefully are you a disciple of Jesus or are you simply a person that has been converted and simply has said the sinner's prayer and is basically coasting through life.

[00:17:10] Remember what a disciple is a disciple is a follower of Jesus in first John chapter four verse 17 it says as he is in this world so are we friends not only are we to be followers of Jesus that we are to be his representatives.

[00:17:37] In other words we are to do the same things that he would do if he was in the world today hopefully this has been good for many of you today.

[00:17:52] I am trying to get you to open your eyes to the possibility of what your life could be as a true disciple of Jesus. Friends I will never end a podcast without giving anyone an opportunity to receive Jesus as your Lord in Savior.

[00:18:14] If there is anyone listening and you've never taken that step I invite you to repeat a simple prayer after me today. Jesus I confess that I am a sinner and indeed of a Savior. I believe that you are the Son of God.

[00:18:32] I believe that you came to earth and died on a cross and were buried on the third day you rose again from the dead. I believe by dying on that cross all of my sins have been forgiven and yet I still need your help.

[00:18:52] I ask you come into my heart, I ask that you lead me and guide me from this point forward in Jesus name amen. Friends if you said that prayer I like to invite you to go to my webpage wisdom today bk.com.

[00:19:11] If you would click on the contact tab let me know you said that prayer I would like to rejoice with you.

[00:19:19] Friends this is not the only step you need to take if you said that prayer it is vitally important that you find a good church and begin going.

[00:19:33] That you meet fellow Christians people who think like mindedly and can help you as you begin this new walk in Christ. Now may the Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you.

[00:19:54] The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. Friends please join me again tomorrow as we further explore wisdom today.
