558. Gospel of Luke - Chapter 7 (#2) - Jesus Raises a Man From the Dead - May 22, 2024

Welcome to Wisdom Today with Bill Kelley. Today we will be going over Proverb 22. I will then key in on verse 29 - Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; He will not stand before unknown men. Friends, in the story that I will share today that man is Jesus Himself. He excelled in the work that He did. He had compassion on this widow and raised her son from the dead. On today's podcast we will continue our study on the Gospel according to Luke. We will begin in Chapter 7, verse 11. By the end of today's lesson there are three things that I ask that you consider:

1. Jesus had compassion on the mother.

2. Jesus raises up a man from the dead.

3. Frear came upon all, and they glorified God.

Call to Action - Now that everyone knows that Jesus has raised a man from the dead, I'd like for you to predict what will happen in the next few chapters?

[00:00:06] and I'll be your host. In this podcast we will be exploring the book of Proverbs.

[00:00:21] An in prayer. Father God, I thank you for anyone listening to this podcast today. Lord,

[00:00:27] I pray that you open up everyone's ears to hear and heart to receive everything you have in store for them today.

[00:00:34] I ask this in Jesus name, Amen. This is Proverbs 22 beginning in verse 1.

[00:00:42] A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches,

[00:00:47] loving favor rather than silver and gold. The rich and the poor have this in common.

[00:00:55] The Lord is the maker of them all. A prudent man for seems evil and hides himself,

[00:01:03] but the simple pass on and are punished by humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor and life.

[00:01:15] Thorns and snares are the way of the Proverbs. He who guards his soul will be far from them.

[00:01:23] Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

[00:01:30] The rich rules over the poor and the borrower is servant to the lender.

[00:01:37] He who soaves in equity will reap sorrow and the rod of his anger will fail.

[00:01:45] He who has a generous eye will be blessed for he gives of his bread to the poor.

[00:01:53] Cast out the scoffer and contention will leave. Yes, strife and reproach will cease.

[00:02:02] He who loves purity of heart and has grace on his lips. The king will be his friend.

[00:02:10] The eyes of the Lord preserve knowledge that he overthrows the words of the faithless.

[00:02:17] The lazy man says, there is a lion outside. I shall be slain in the streets.

[00:02:26] The mouth of an immoral woman is a deep pit. He who is abhorred by the Lord will follow there.

[00:02:34] Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child. The rod of correction will drive it far from him.

[00:02:44] He who oppresses the poor to increase his riches and he who gives to the rich will surely come to poverty.

[00:02:55] Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise and apply your heart to my knowledge for it is a pleasant thing if you keep them within you.

[00:03:08] Let them all be fixed upon your lips so that your trust may be in the Lord.

[00:03:16] I have instructed you today, even you, have I not written to you excellent things of councils and knowledge that I may make you know the certainty of the words of truth,

[00:03:32] that you may answer words of truth to those who send to you. Do not rob the poor because he is poor, nor oppress the afflicted at the gate.

[00:03:45] For the Lord will plead their cause and plunder the soul of those who plunder them.

[00:03:54] Make no friendship with an angry man and with a furious man do not go.

[00:04:01] Lest you learn his ways and set a snare for your soul. Do not be one of those who shakes hands in a pledge, one of those who is surety for debts if you have nothing with which to pay.

[00:04:18] Why should he take away your bed from under you? Do not remove the ancient landmark which your fathers have said.

[00:04:27] Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings. He will not stand before unknown men.

[00:04:40] Friends today I'd like to take a closer look at that last verse.

[00:04:45] And proper 22 verse 29 says this. Do you see a man who excels in his work?

[00:04:55] He will stand before kings he will not stand before unknown men.

[00:05:04] Friends we will take a closer look at that verse prior to closing today.

[00:05:10] But what I'd like to do is continue in our study of the gospel according to Luke.

[00:05:17] And on Monday's podcast we left off in chapter 7 verse 10.

[00:05:25] And we are going to pick up right where we left off so we will begin in chapter 7 beginning in verse 11.

[00:05:35] Now it happened the day after that he went into a city called Nane and many of his disciples went with him and a large crowd.

[00:05:48] And when he came near the gate of the city, behold a dead man was being carried out.

[00:05:56] The only son of his mother and she was a widow.

[00:06:02] And a large crowd from the city was with her.

[00:06:06] When the Lord saw her he had compassion on her and said to her, do not weep.

[00:06:14] So friends, the first point that I'd like to bring up today is Jesus had compassion on the mother.

[00:06:23] So Jesus did not only have compassion on those who were physically ill and those who had issues in their body.

[00:06:34] He also had compassion with this particular mother and I feel that he knew of this woman.

[00:06:43] She was a widow and she had already lost her husband.

[00:06:48] She only had one son and he now is a man but she has lost him also.

[00:06:56] And Jesus wanted to do something about this.

[00:07:01] So let's go to verse 14, then he came and touched the open coffin.

[00:07:10] And those who carried him stood still.

[00:07:14] Now I can imagine what they are doing.

[00:07:18] These people are called Paul Bears.

[00:07:20] These are the people that are carrying the coffin.

[00:07:24] And when Jesus came, they were probably wondering what he was going to do.

[00:07:31] So they just stood still and they wanted to see what is he going to do.

[00:07:39] And he said, young man, I say to you, arise.

[00:07:45] So he who was dead, sat up and began to speak.

[00:07:51] And he presented him to his mother.

[00:07:55] So point number two for today is Jesus raises up a man from the dead.

[00:08:03] Now friends, I am reading out of the Nelson study Bible.

[00:08:08] And I'd like to read the commentary for verse 12.

[00:08:12] This is a very good explanation of what was going on in this particular scene.

[00:08:18] A dead man was being carried out.

[00:08:22] This was a funeral procession.

[00:08:27] The cemetery was located outside the city gates.

[00:08:32] Funerals were normally held the day of death because keeping a body overnight rendered a house unclean.

[00:08:43] Before the funeral, the body was anointed.

[00:08:48] In a town the size of name many would have stopped to share in the morning.

[00:08:56] So friends, things were a little bit different than they are now.

[00:09:01] So ordinarily now we may have a funeral five, six days after the death.

[00:09:08] But back then it was basically the day of the death.

[00:09:13] They didn't want to be unclean.

[00:09:16] Remember most of the people that we are reading about were Jews.

[00:09:20] And so they wanted to follow the customs and the laws of that time.

[00:09:25] And that law is found in the book of numbers.

[00:09:31] Let's go to verses 14 and 15.

[00:09:35] The fact that Jesus touched the coffin indicated that he preferred helping the dead man to remaining ceremonially clean.

[00:09:48] And if you go to the book of numbers chapter 19, if he simply touched the coffin, he would be unclean for a period of seven days.

[00:10:02] That obviously didn't matter to Jesus.

[00:10:06] Earlier in Luke we found that Jesus had touched the leper.

[00:10:12] Once again he defied the laws of that time where you were not allowed to touch a leper and Jesus simply touched the man of leprosy.

[00:10:25] And immediately upon touching this man, he was restored and he was back in good health.

[00:10:33] Let's go to verse 16.

[00:10:36] Then fear came upon all.

[00:10:40] And they glorified God saying, a great prophet has risen up among us and God has visited his people.

[00:10:52] So friends my third point for today is fear came upon all.

[00:11:00] And they glorified God. So friends the initial reaction of the people is fear.

[00:11:08] I want you to imagine that you are in this ceremony.

[00:11:15] And they are carrying the coffin.

[00:11:18] You are one of the people that are following this and there must have been like a parade of people following this coffin.

[00:11:27] And they were going to go outside of the city gates to the local cemetery and they were all going to pay their final respects.

[00:11:37] But Jesus changed the plans of everyone.

[00:11:41] He touched the coffin, the man arose from the dead and he began speaking.

[00:11:49] So everything changed.

[00:11:52] But immediately the people feared what they had seen.

[00:11:59] They are not used to seeing people raised from the dead.

[00:12:05] But then soon after that they began glorifying God.

[00:12:11] They came to the realization, wow he's alive.

[00:12:15] Wow that's so exciting.

[00:12:18] They must have really rejoiced at that point.

[00:12:22] But initially there was fear as probably would happen if that happened with us today.

[00:12:31] So Jesus had compassion on people.

[00:12:34] Jesus did not like people who were mourning, people who were sad.

[00:12:42] So Jesus went about doing good.

[00:12:46] He went around healing people.

[00:12:48] He went around freeing people who had been demon possessed.

[00:12:54] And he wanted people to be spiritually whole as well.

[00:13:01] Before we close today I'd like to go back to our verse of the day.

[00:13:07] And friends every day what I try to do is pick a verse in the proverb of the day that relates to our story.

[00:13:18] And the best verse that I could pick out today was verse 29.

[00:13:23] And proverb 22 verse 29 says,

[00:13:27] Do you see a man who excels in his work?

[00:13:33] Friends in this particular story that man who excelled in his work was Jesus himself.

[00:13:42] He excelled in making people comfortable and freeing people from emotional hardship.

[00:13:53] This woman who had already previously lost her husband had now lost her only son.

[00:14:01] She was going to be all by herself, not only was she a widow but now she no longer had her son as well.

[00:14:11] He will stand before kings and this is a prophecy basically of what Jesus did.

[00:14:20] And Jesus ended up standing before King Herod when he was being tried.

[00:14:28] Pilate wanted to do all he could to free his hands from this emotional mess that he had found himself in.

[00:14:37] And so when he realized that Jesus was from Galilee that was a jurisdiction of King Herod.

[00:14:44] So he knew at the time that King Herod had also arrived in Jerusalem,

[00:14:51] so he sent Jesus to him.

[00:14:54] So he did stand before King.

[00:14:58] Now exactly what happened with Herod, Herod did not want to take the responsibility for Jesus either.

[00:15:06] So Herod after speaking with Jesus, sent Jesus back to Pilate.

[00:15:13] He will not stand before unknown men.

[00:15:18] Friends, Jesus was a man of great repute.

[00:15:25] Basically from the moment Jesus began his public ministry, he was viewed differently by everyone.

[00:15:35] He was different.

[00:15:37] He was unlike anything any man had ever seen.

[00:15:43] He spoke differently.

[00:15:45] He healed people that people were not used to healing.

[00:15:51] And in this particular case, he raised someone from the dead.

[00:15:57] So it was hard for people to basically forget about Jesus.

[00:16:04] It was hard for them to not talk about them.

[00:16:08] So we go to our last verse of the day in verse 17,

[00:16:12] and it says, and this report about him went throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region.

[00:16:22] So everyone now knows that Jesus has raised a man from the dead.

[00:16:31] I want you, and this is my call to action today.

[00:16:36] This is my call. So what I'd like for you to do is think and predict what is going to happen in the next chapter or chapters.

[00:16:49] Now that they know that Jesus is not only healing people, but now he has raised someone from the dead as well.

[00:17:00] Friends, I will never end a podcast without giving anyone an opportunity to receive Jesus as their Lord in Savior.

[00:17:09] If there is anyone listening today and you've never taken that step, I invite you to repeat a simple prayer after me today.

[00:17:30] By dying on that cross, you have forgiven everyone listening of all of their sins for all time.

[00:17:38] And yet Jesus, I invite you to come into my heart.

[00:17:42] I ask that you lead me and guide me from this point forward.

[00:17:47] I make you my Lord and Savior.
