Welcome to Lessons from the Psalms. This is Bill Kelley, and I'll be your host. Today we will be covering Psalm 9. Psalm 9 was written by King David and was originally written to the music director. That means it was to be sung (or chanted) as part of praise and worship at a church service of some type. This psalm is an example of why so many people turn to psalms on a regular basis. It is very positive and upbeat, and reminds us of the goodness of God. David consistently reminds us that we are to praise God and be mindful of all that He has done for us. This psalm also challenges us - in that it reminds us that sometimes in life things will not go our way. Circumstances or people may come against us. David sets an example for us in that - when these situations occur we simply need to turn to God and ask Him to help us in that situation. The end of the psalm talks about our present-day world. While leadership of countries around the world are trying to erase all semblance of God and of our need for Him, David reminds us that, ultimately, the Lord will prevail - if we keep our eyes on Him.
