Welcome to Lessons From the Psalms with Bill Kelley. Today we will be going over Psalm 79. Psalm 79 is attributed to the Praise and Worship leader Asaph. It is very similar to Psalm 74 (which he also wrote). This is a psalm of lament - meaning it is not really a happy psalm. However, I believe there are still things we can learn from this psalm that will benefit us in our lives today. I will begin by going over the first four verses. These verses literally speak of the destruction of the city of Jerusalem by the Babylonian empire over 2,500 years ago. Today it could refer to something catastrophic that could happen in our lives today (losing your pension after working with a company 25 years; losing a spouse or other loved one without any advanced notice; or perhaps receiving a report of a terminal illness and being told you only have months to live. Verses 5-7 speak of non-Christians who may come against you and make life miserable for you. But the three things I would like to key in are these:
1. Let your gender mercies come speedily to meet us.
2. Help us, O God of our salvation, For the glory of your name.
3. We will show forth Your praise to all generations.
