Welcome to Lessons From the Psalms with Bill Kelley. Today we will be going over Psalm 61. This psalm is attributed to David. It is a beautiful psalm. It was originally written to be accompanied by a stringed instrument. This reminds me of when David was a youthful shepherd boy. He would be summoned to play the harp for King Saul. Verse 1 should be everyone's prayer every day - that God should hear us when we cry out to Him. Verse 2 reminds us that God is the rock - many times we try to make our own decisions, but life can seem overwhelming at times. We need to seek Him in our time of need. Verse 3 refers to God as a strong tower. This reminds me of Proverb 18:10 - the name of the Lord is a strong tower. This delights me - as the writer of Proverbs (Solomon) demonstrates the same heart for God as his father - Kind David of Israel. Verse 4 tells us that David will abide in Your tabernacle forever. This is reminiscent of Psalm 23:6 - which is also written by David. Verse 5 talks about the coming King Jesus (during the 2nd coming). Verse 6 talks about David's life being prolonged - this is a promise in the Bible for all those who follow the commandments of the Lord. Verse 7 talks about God's mercy and truth - that reminds me of the Lord Jesus. He often showed mercy while on Earth. We close this psalm with our reminder that once we receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior is that we are to serve Him all the days of our lives.
