Welcome to Lessons from the Psalms. Hello. This is Bill Kelley and I will be your host. Today we will be looking at Psalm 5. King David wrote this psalm after he had become king. There were people who were speaking negatively about his leadership of the country of Israel. This psalm is broken down into three parts: verses 1-6 (a prayer to the Lord for deliverance in a time of trouble); verses 7-9 (a desire to worship the Lord in a time of trouble; and verses 10-12 (a longing for final judgment by the Lord in times of trouble. As this psalm begins David is pleading to God that He will hear his voice. He tells him that, regardless of what is happening in his life, he will seek Him. This is an example of what we should be doing in our present time. He asks God to see those against him and that they be judged for their wrongdoing. We close this psalm with David urging everyone to put their trust in the "living God". He implied that we will be joyful (known as the joy of the Lord) and that - if we put our trust in Him he will surround us as with a shield.
