Welcome to Lessons From the Psalms with Bill Kelley. Today we will be going over Psalm 141. Psalm 141 is attributed to King David of Israel, and, in some ways is very similar to Psalm 140 (if you did not get a chance to tune in to Psalm 140 I invite you to do so). I believe Psalm 141 is very appropriate to us in our world today. We have so many distractions each day it is very easy to be distracted - and get our minds (and hearts) off of God. David reminds us of the importance of our words. He also asks God to hear his prayer (when he prays to him). He also asks God to not allow him to be ensnared by evil people (or the temptations of the world). Finally he asks God for His protection from those who would cause him harm. By the end of today's lesson there are three things I ask that you consider:
1. Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips. (our words are so important - and David specifically asks for God's help in this area).
2. O Lord, help me to avoid the temptations that come my way. (There are many things in this world that will distract us from focusing on God - if we allow them to).
3. Regardless of what temptations come my way I will keep my eyes on Jesus.
Two verses came to mind when reading this psalm - Psalm 19:14 - May the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart by pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer (reminding us of the importance of our words) and Hebrews 12:2 - reminding us to keep our minds (and hearts) on Jesus (and not be distracted by the things of this world).
