Lessons From the Psalms - Psalm 137

Welcome to Lessons From the Psalms with Bill Kelley. Today we will be going over Psalm 137. Psalm 137 is an anonymous psalm - but the author is obviously speaking to the Jewish people. He is remembering the time when the Babylonians came to the city of Jerusalem, destroyed the town, and then took the people captive to their country of Babylon. He tells the people that they should not forget their lovely city of Jerusalem, how the captives made them sing their worship songs for them, and actually placed a curse on the people who had done this to them. My three takeaways from this psalm are a bit different:
1. The Babylonian captors made the captive3s sing their worship songs. (even though the Babylonian people were going to take the Jewish people away from their roots, they really admired the worship songs that they sang - and forced them to entertain them with these songs of praise).
2. We need to remember where we came from (prior to becoming Christians we did awful things in our life as well. The author is reminding us that we should always remember where we came from - and hopefully learn from our mistakes and begin behaving differently0.
3. We should pray for those who have wronged us (rather that curse the people (as the author suggests we do) I recommend that we do what Jesus told us to do (in His sermon on the mount - that we should love our enemies, and that we should pray for those that wrongfully persecute us.
