Welcome to Wisdom Today with Bill Kelley. Today we will be going over Proverb 19. I will then key in on verse 11 - The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger; And his glory is to overlook a transgression. Friends, we need to learn to have patience and to restrain ourselves from acting impulsively. On today's podcast we will continue our study in the Gospel according to Luke. We will look at the Transfiguration of Jesus. By the end of today's lesson there are three things that I ask that you consider:
1. Jesus is transfigured on the mount.
2. Moses and Elijah speak with Jesus about His decease.
3. God again declares Jesus as His son.
Call to Action - I would like everyone to review these three statements today and ask yourself what God is trying to tell us in today's lesson? I believe He is wanting us to know beyond the shadow of a doubt that Jesus is His son, and that we are to treat Him as such.
[00:00:06] and I'll be your host. In this podcast we will be exploring the book of Proverbs. That is the poor who walks in his integrity, then one who is perverse in his lips and is a fool.
[00:00:51] Also it is not good for a soul to be without knowledge, and he sins who hastens with his feet. The foolishness of a man twists his way, and his heart frets against the Lord.
[00:01:07] Well, makes many friends, but the poor is separated from his friend. A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who speaks lies will not escape. Many intrigue the favor of the nobility, and every man is a friend to one who gives gifts.
[00:01:30] All the brothers of the poor hate him, how much more do his friends go far from him? He may pursue them with words, yet they abandon him. He who gets wisdom loves his own soul, he who keeps understanding will find good.
[00:01:50] A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who speaks lies will perish. Logtery is not fitting for a fool, much less for a servant to rule over princes. The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger, and his glory is to overlook a transgression.
[00:02:15] The king's wrath is like the roaring of a lion, but his favor is like due on the grass. A foolish son is the ruin of his father, and the contentions of a wife are a continual dripping.
[00:02:33] Houses and riches are an inheritance from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the Lord. Lacing us casts one into a deep sleep, and an idle person will suffer hunger. He who keeps the commandment keeps his soul, that he who is careless of his ways will die.
[00:02:58] He who has pity on the poor, lends to the Lord, and he will pay back what he has given. Chaysen your son while there is hope, and do not set your heart on his destruction.
[00:03:13] A man of great wrath will suffer punishment for if you rescue him, you will have to do it again. Listen to Council and receive instruction that you may be wise in your latter days. There are many plans in a man's heart, nevertheless the Lord's Council that will stand.
[00:03:39] What is desired in a man is kindness, and a poor man is better than a liar. The fear of the Lord leads to life, and he who has it will abide in satisfaction. He will not be visited with evil.
[00:03:56] A lazy man buries his hand in the bowl, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again. Strike a scoffer, and the simple will become wary. Review one who has understanding and he will discern knowledge.
[00:04:15] He who mistreats his father, and chases away his mother, is a son who causes shame and brings reproach. Seas listening to instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge. A just reputable witness, scorns, justice, and the mouth of the wicked devours iniquity.
[00:04:42] Friends today I'd like to take a closer look at verse 11, And proper 19 verse 11 says this, The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger, and his glory is to overlook a transgression. Friends we will take a closer look at that verse prior to closing today,
[00:05:07] But what I'd like to do right now is to continue in our study of the gospel according to Luke. And in today's lesson we are going to look at a passage of scripture that is entitled, Jesus, transfigured on the mouth.
[00:05:28] Now we have been in the ninth chapter of Luke, and today we're going to continue beginning in verse 28. Now it came to pass about eight days after these sayings that he took Peter, John, and James, And went up on the mountain to pray.
[00:05:51] As he prayed, the appearance of his face was altered, and his robe became white and glistening. So friends, my first point that I would like to bring up in today's lesson is, Jesus is transfigured on the mouth. Now friends, I am reading out of the Nelson study Bible,
[00:06:17] And I'd like to go over the commentary found in my Bible for verse 29. And it says, at the transfiguration, Jesus was altered into a radiant figure, even down to his white and glistening clothes.
[00:06:37] The description here is similar to the description of the glory of Moses after seeing God. And of course, that account is found in Exodus chapter 34. Let's go to verse 30, and behold, two men talked with him,
[00:06:59] who were Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of his disease, which he was about to accomplish in Jerusalem. So friends, my second point today is Moses and Elijah speak with Jesus about his disease. Now this is a very important commentary.
[00:07:29] So this is the commentary for verse 31. Decease is literally Exodus. This important illusion to the central Old Testament event of salvation is unique to Luke's account of the transfiguration. The comparison is made between Jesus' death and the journey to salvation, that the nation of Israel experienced under Moses.
[00:08:03] Jesus' journey would take him to the side of God, from which he will return to exercise authority. And of course that account is found in the book of Acts in chapters 2, chapter 10 and chapter 17. Let's go to verse 32. But Peter and those with him were heavy with sleep.
[00:08:36] And when they were fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him, then it happened as they were parting from him that Peter said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here.
[00:08:56] And let us make three tabernacles, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah, not knowing what he said. Let's look at the commentary for verse 33. Let us make three tabernacles. Peter, Desirent structures for the two Old Testament visitors and Jesus,
[00:09:23] perhaps as a means of prolonging their visit. Not knowing what he said. Peter did not see that Jesus was very different from Moses and Elijah. He was inaugurating a new era. So Jesus is definitely different than the prophets of Old. Now let's go to verse 34.
[00:09:54] While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them and they were fearful as they entered the cloud. Now friends, the cloud is simply a sign that God has entered their presence. This happens quite a bit in the Old Testament.
[00:10:19] So whenever a cloud enters into the picture, it means that God is making his presence known. Let's go to verse 35. And a voice came out of the cloud saying, this is my beloved son, hear him. When the voice had ceased, Jesus was found alone.
[00:10:49] But they kept quiet and told no one in those days any of the things they had seen. Now friends, the third point that I would like to bring up is that God again declares Jesus as his son.
[00:11:09] Now friends, if you recall earlier in the Gospel of Luke, this happened after Jesus had been baptized by John the Baptist in the River Jordan.
[00:11:23] And immediately after Jesus arose from being baptized, if is submerged and then when he comes up out of the water, a spirit like the dove came down. And God said, this is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased.
[00:11:49] And friends, a lot of people are not aware that God said this a second time. This is unique to the Gospel of Luke. Now let's go to the commentary for verse 35. This is my beloved son. This is the second heavenly endorsement of Jesus.
[00:12:16] The reference to the beloved son recalls the words of Psalms 2, verse 7, Isaiah 42, verse 1. The command to hear him goes back to the book of Deuteronomy and that would be found in chapter 18, verses 15 through 18. And identifies Jesus as the prophet promised in that passage.
[00:12:48] Jesus as the new prophet would lead a new group of people into salvation, just as Moses led the nation of Israel. As a revealer of God's will, Jesus had much to teach the disciples about God's plan. The disciples needed to listen because they had much to learn.
[00:13:15] And friends, we are only near the halfway point of the Gospel of Luke. Now I have mentioned on a number of occasions in this study that Luke is the most comprehensive of the four gospels. So we still have a long way to go in the Gospel of Luke.
[00:13:39] So I invite anyone listening today to pay attention to stay with me as we continue looking at this Gospel over the next two to three months.
[00:13:53] So before we close today, I'd like to go back to our prophet of the day and we are in prophet 19 and let's look at the 11th verse. Now friends, I could have very easily chosen four or five other verses today.
[00:14:11] I haven't had this issue for quite a while, but actually there was a number of verses I was thinking about bringing up. And for any of you interested, I will talk about those in case you would like to take a look at those today.
[00:14:28] The verses five and nine are very similar, and they're talking about false witnesses and the fact that if you are a false witness that basically you will be punished. We also could have looked at verse eight. I really like this verse.
[00:14:48] He who gets wisdom loves his own soul. I really like that. He who keeps understanding will find good and the commentary for verse eight to find good basically means to find Jesus, the son of God in his holy scriptures.
[00:15:12] Today we're going over verse 11 and that says the discretion of a man makes him slow to anger. Now listen to the commentary for verse 11. Discression here means patience and restraint are virtues of wisdom. And friends, this podcast I identify with wisdom.
[00:15:41] My goal is that people that listen every day or even if you're just listening for today is that you learn to acquire wisdom and display wisdom in your everyday life. The second part of verse 11 and his glory is to overlook a transgression.
[00:16:05] Now let's look at the second part of the commentary. Rationalists and violent outbursts of rage are not virtues of wisdom. So friends, this verse tells us that we have a choice that we are to learn to have patience and restraint in our everyday lives.
[00:16:31] Or we can choose to be like a bull in a china shop and learn to be rash and have violent outbursts of rage. Now I'd like to ask a simple question which one of those sounds better and which one would you like to be?
[00:16:53] Would you like to learn to have patience and to show restraint or do you want to have violent outburst? I think I know the answer to that question and I'm hoping anyone listening does as well.
[00:17:10] My call to action today, I'd really like for you to think about this lesson that we've talked about today. I'd like to review the three points. Jesus is transfigured on the mount. I really want you to pretend that you were actually there. His image, his face, actually changed.
[00:17:37] It actually globe and listened, including his clothes. What do you think that God is trying to tell us in this passage of scripture? The second point, Moses and Elijah speak with Jesus.
[00:17:54] What is the meaning of Moses and Elijah coming back even for a brief moment and speaking to Jesus? And they were talking about what Jesus was about to do on the cross for us.
[00:18:17] I find that fascinating and the third point is God again declares Jesus as his son. This is the second time he's done this. What do you feel God is really trying to let us know?
[00:18:37] What I think he's doing is I think that he is wanting to penetrate our psyche and our hearts to realize that Jesus is indeed the son of the living God. And we should treat him as such.
[00:19:02] Friends, I will never end a podcast without giving anyone an opportunity to receive Jesus as their Lord and Savior. If there is anyone listening today and you've never taken that step, I invite you to repeat a simple prayer after me today.
[00:19:19] Jesus, I confess that I am a sinner and in need of a Savior. I ask that you come into my heart. I ask that you lead me and guide me from this point forward in my life. I make you my Lord and Savior.
[00:19:37] Friends, if any of you repeated that prayer, I invite you to go on my webpage, wisdom today, B.K. Let me know you said that prayer.
[00:19:50] There is a contact tab if you would simply click on that contact button and or in your name, write a brief description that you said that prayer. I want to rejoice with you and get back with you. Now, made a Lord bless you and keep you.
[00:20:09] The Lord makes a shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. Friends, please join me again tomorrow as we further explore wisdom today.
