531. Luke's Gospel - Chapter 3 (#2) - God Announces that Jesus is His Son - April 15, 2024

Welcome to Wisdom Today with Bill Kelley. Today we will be going over Proverb 15. I will then key in on verse 9 - The way of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, But He loves him who follows righteousness. Friends, this verse is very clear. To please God we must NOT do evil, but be righteous. Over and over again in proverbs it talks about the benefits you will receive for being righteous and the bad things that will happen to you if you are not. On today's podcast, I will go over Chapter 3, and read verses 18-38. Upon completion of this lesson I ask that you consider three things:

1. Herod the tetrarch puts John the Baptist in jail (for rebuking him).

2. God announces that Jesus is His son (immediately upon being baptized).

3. Luke traces Jesus's lineage all the way back to Adam.

Call to Action - Imagine what it must have been like that day - when God orally spoke from Heaven announcing that Jesus was His son, and that He was well pleased with Him.

[00:00:00] Welcome to Wisdom Today. My name is Bill Kelley and I'll be your host. In this podcast

[00:00:12] we will be exploring the book of Proverbs. Let's open in prayer. Father God, I thank

[00:00:24] you for anyone listening to this podcast today. I pray that you would reveal to everyone

[00:00:29] listening how much you truly love each and every one of them. In addition, I pray

[00:00:35] that everyone listening would have favor with both God and man. I ask this in Jesus name,

[00:00:42] Amen. This is Proverbs 15 beginning in verse 1. A soft answer turns away wrath but a harsh

[00:00:52] word stirs up anger. The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly but the mouth of

[00:00:59] fools pours forth foolishness. The eyes of the Lord are in every place keeping watch on

[00:01:07] the evil and the good. A wholesome tongue is a tree of life but perverseness in it breaks

[00:01:16] the spirit. A fool despises his father's instruction but he who receives correction is prudent.

[00:01:25] In the house of the righteous there is much treasure but in the revenue of the wicked

[00:01:31] is trouble. The lips of the wise disperse knowledge but the heart of the fool does not do so.

[00:01:41] The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord but the prayer of the upright is his

[00:01:48] delight. The way of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord but he loves him who follows righteousness.

[00:01:58] Harsh discipline is for him who forsakes the way and he who hates correction will die.

[00:02:06] Real and destruction are before the Lord so how much more the hearts of the sons of men.

[00:02:14] A scoffer does not love one who corrects him nor does he go to the wise. A merry heart makes a

[00:02:24] cheerful countenance but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken. The heart of him who has

[00:02:33] understanding seeks knowledge but the mouth of fools feeds on foolishness. All the days of the

[00:02:41] afflicted are evil but he who is of a merry heart has a continual feast. Better is a little

[00:02:50] with the fear of the Lord than great treasure with trouble. Better is a dinner of herbs where love

[00:02:58] than a fatted calf with hatred. A raffle man stirs up strife but he who is slow to anger

[00:03:08] a laze contention. The way of the lazy man is like a hedge of thorns but the way of the upright

[00:03:17] is a highway. A wise son makes a father glad but a foolish man despises his mother.

[00:03:27] Folly is joy to him who is destitute of discernment but a man of understanding walks uprightly.

[00:03:37] Without counsel plans go awry but in the multitude of counselors they are established.

[00:03:45] A man has joy by the answer of his mouth and a word spoken in due season how good it is.

[00:03:56] The way of life winds upward for the wise that he may turn away from hell below.

[00:04:04] The Lord will destroy the house of the proud but he will establish the boundary of the widow.

[00:04:12] The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the Lord but the words of the pure are pleasant.

[00:04:20] He who is greedy for gain troubles his own house but he who hates bribes will live.

[00:04:29] The heart of the righteous studies how to answer but the mouth of the wicked pours forth evil.

[00:04:37] The Lord is far from the wicked but he hears the prayer of the righteous.

[00:04:44] The light of the eyes rejoices the heart and a good report makes the bones healthy.

[00:04:52] The ear that hears the rebukes of life will abide among the wise.

[00:04:58] He who distains instruction despises his own soul but he who heads rebuk gets understanding.

[00:05:08] The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom and before honor is humility.

[00:05:17] Prince today I'd like to take a closer look at verse 9 and probably 15 verse 9 tells us this.

[00:05:26] The way of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord but he loves him who follows righteousness.

[00:05:36] Friends we will take a closer look at that verse prior to closing today but what I'd like to do

[00:05:43] is to continue our study in the gospel according to Luke and we began chapter 3 on Thursday's podcast

[00:05:54] so let's pick up in chapter 3 verse 18 and with many other exhortations he preached to the people

[00:06:04] but herod the tetrarke being rebuked by him concerning Herodius his brother Philip's wife

[00:06:13] and for all the evils which herod had done also added this above all that he shut John up in prison.

[00:06:24] So friends the first point I'd like to bring up in today's lesson is that Herod puts John in prison.

[00:06:32] Now friends I am reading out of the Nelson study Bible and what I'd like to do is read the

[00:06:38] commentary for verses 19 and 20 in my Bible when it says he shut John up in prison.

[00:06:48] This event is clearly not in chronological order since John could not have baptized Jesus

[00:06:58] if he was in jail. John had rebuked Herod for divorcing his wife to marry his own niece Herodius

[00:07:08] who already had been the wife of his brother Philip not only was the divorce a problem so was

[00:07:16] marrying such a close relative. So let's go on to verse 21 and this is entitled John baptizes Jesus

[00:07:29] when all the people were baptized it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized and while he prayed

[00:07:39] the heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon him

[00:07:49] and a voice came from heaven which said you are my beloved son in whom I am well pleased.

[00:08:00] So friends the second point I'd like to bring up today is that God announces that Jesus is his son.

[00:08:09] Now I would like to have been there when I sit there and think a voice came from heaven.

[00:08:18] I'd like for all of you just to close your eyes for just a moment and think about what that must

[00:08:26] have actually been like. At this point Jesus had not yet been introduced his ministry was not yet begun

[00:08:38] and here he's announcing that this is my son in whom I am well pleased. Let's go on to this next

[00:08:51] section was his entitled the Genealogy of Jesus Christ beginning in verse 23.

[00:08:59] Now Jesus himself began his ministry at about 30 years of age being as was supposed the son of Joseph,

[00:09:11] the son of Hely, the son of Mayfat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchee, the son of Janna,

[00:09:19] the son of Joseph, the son of Matafaya, the son of Amos, the son of Nehum, the son of Esley,

[00:09:28] the son of Nagai, the son of Mayath, the son of Matafaya, the son of Senai, the son of Joseph,

[00:09:36] the son of Judah, the son of Johannes, the son of Risa, the son of Zarubabel, the son of Shil Teal,

[00:09:44] the son of Meyrai, the son of Melchee, the son of Adai, the son of Cosum, the son of Elmodum,

[00:09:52] the son of Err, the son of Hosei, the son of Eriezer, the son ofjorim,

[00:09:58] the son of Mayfat, the son of Levi, the son of Simion, the son of Judah,

[00:10:04] the son of Joseph, the son of Jonan, the son of Al навlichem, the son of Malia,

[00:10:11] the son of Mminin, the son of Matathah, the son of Nathan,

[00:10:16] The son of David, the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Salman,

[00:10:23] the son of Naishan, the son of Minadab, the son of Ram, the son of Hezran, the son

[00:10:30] of Perez, the son of Judah, the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham,

[00:10:38] the son of Tyrah, the son of Nehore, the son of Sarrug, the son of Reh you, the son

[00:10:44] of Pellegr, the son of Iber, the son of Sheila, the son of Canaan,

[00:10:50] the son of Ahxhad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah,

[00:10:55] the son of Lemek, the son of Methuselah, the son of Enek,

[00:10:59] The son of Jerusalem,

[00:11:01] of Mahalalel, the Son of Canaan, the Son of Enoch, the Son of Seth, the Son of Adam,

[00:11:09] the Son of God.

[00:11:11] Now friends I would like to read the commentary for verses 23 through 38 as was supposed.

[00:11:21] People naturally assumed that Jesus was the physical son of both Joseph and Mary.

[00:11:29] Luke corrected this misunderstanding by emphasizing that Jesus was only apparently Joseph's

[00:11:37] physical son.

[00:11:39] Luke's genealogy is unlike Matthews, although both go back to David and Abraham.

[00:11:48] Luke traces Jesus's line all the way back to Adam, showing Jesus's significance for

[00:11:57] all people.

[00:11:59] Matthew provides the legal lineage from David through Joseph to Jesus, while Luke provides

[00:12:09] the physical lineage from David through Mary to Jesus.

[00:12:18] And friends one thing I'd like to point out here is that Luke obviously is more concerned

[00:12:25] with accuracy and giving factual truth than a chronological order.

[00:12:34] That's the only reason that might explain why he goes into verses 18 through 20 and

[00:12:42] talking about John the Baptist being put into prison prior to John baptizing Jesus.

[00:12:53] Now friends Luke is meticulous in his data.

[00:12:58] One thing I tried to make perfectly clear when I began this study is that Luke is so interested

[00:13:08] in the details.

[00:13:09] I talked about the fact that he is a physician and he doesn't want to make any mistakes

[00:13:15] at all.

[00:13:17] He clarified things, he made things clear.

[00:13:22] And so it's not really important the order of his writing but the accuracy and where

[00:13:29] he was.

[00:13:31] And I like the fact that he goes into such detail with this genealogy.

[00:13:37] I think that is vitally important because we know that he took the time and detailed

[00:13:46] and looked at everything prior to writing it.

[00:13:50] I just think that is awesome.

[00:13:53] Friends before we close today I'd like to go back to our proverb of the day.

[00:13:58] Today is the 15th so we read Proverbs 15 and I'd like to spend just a moment on verse

[00:14:05] 9.

[00:14:06] The way of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord.

[00:14:12] Now friends I want to go back to a time when I was not saved.

[00:14:18] And at that time I basically lived my life for myself.

[00:14:22] I really only thought about myself and rarely thought about other people and their well-being

[00:14:30] but since I become a Christian slowly but surely I have learned it's very important what

[00:14:38] other people are thinking.

[00:14:40] It's very important what other people are feeling.

[00:14:44] You want people to be satisfied, to be happy, to be content.

[00:14:50] And I think one of the ways we do that is to go along with some of the things that they

[00:14:55] propose even if it's not something that you would like.

[00:15:00] But he loves him who follows righteousness.

[00:15:05] So here this verse is one of the clearest portrayals of the fact that if you are righteous

[00:15:16] and if you do the right things over and over and over again, that God is going to be pleased

[00:15:23] with you.

[00:15:24] Here it says he loves you if you do righteous things but the way of the wicked is an abomination

[00:15:35] to the Lord.

[00:15:36] And abomination means that this is something that God hates.

[00:15:41] He hates people to do evil.

[00:15:45] He absolutely hates it and over and over again in Proverbs it talks about the bad that doing

[00:15:55] evil causes.

[00:15:57] We do not want to do evil or associate with people who live that kind of lifestyle.

[00:16:06] Friends my call to action today is quite simple what I'd like for you to do is think about

[00:16:13] Jesus being baptized in the River Jordan.

[00:16:19] He is there.

[00:16:20] John has just baptized him.

[00:16:23] He's dunked him in water and as soon as he comes up a holy spirit in the form of a dove

[00:16:33] comes down.

[00:16:35] And God majestically speaks in an audible voice so anyone there can hear this.

[00:16:44] This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased.

[00:16:52] Friends think of the ramifications of that comment and this is the beginning of Jesus'

[00:17:02] ministry.

[00:17:03] From this point on he will get to work and begin to look for disciples or people that

[00:17:11] will be followers of him and what he was brought on earth to do.

[00:17:19] Friends I will never end a podcast without giving anyone an opportunity to receive Jesus

[00:17:25] as their Lord and Savior.

[00:17:27] If there is anyone listening today and you've never taken that step, I ask you to repeat

[00:17:33] a simple prayer after me today.

[00:17:35] Jesus I believe that you are the Son of God.

[00:17:39] I believe that you came to earth and died on a cross and were buried on the third day

[00:17:47] you rose from the dead and now sit at the right hand of God the Father.

[00:17:55] Jesus I confess that I am a sinner, but I believe that by what you did on that cross

[00:18:03] I have now been put in right standing with God.

[00:18:08] Thank you for forgiving me of all of my sins and yet Jesus I still need your help.

[00:18:15] I ask that you come into my heart, I ask that you lead me and guide me from this point

[00:18:21] forward in my life.

[00:18:23] I make you my Lord and Savior.

[00:18:27] Friends if you enjoyed this podcast, if you would let people know about it, I kind of look

[00:18:35] at this podcast kind of like a good movie.

[00:18:39] I know that this is good material.

[00:18:41] I believe that this is material that people need to hear.

[00:18:46] It's the good news.

[00:18:47] It's the gospel and friends if you enjoy this podcast today or if you are a regular listener
